If cozy with a shot of cranky is your prescription for feel-good TV, then Fox\u2019s latest dramedy Best Medicine<\/em><\/a> should be right up your alley. Based on Doc Martin<\/a><\/em>, the U.K. hit about a churlish London medic (Martin Clunes<\/a>) dealing with the quaint residents of his new seaside practice, Best Medicine<\/em> was championed here in the U.S. by producer Ben Silverman<\/a> (The Office<\/em><\/a>, Ugly Betty<\/a><\/em>). The show is an instantly likable fish-out-of-water tale, brimming with snarky humor and 100cc of sentiment. Think more Northern Exposure<\/a><\/em> and Ed<\/em><\/a> than House<\/em><\/a> or Fox\u2019s other medical series, Doc<\/em><\/a>, starring Molly Parker<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThat kind of tone is a really tricky balance,\u201d says Josh Charles<\/a>, an Emmy nominee for The Good Wife<\/a><\/em>, who affably grouses into the leading-man department as Martin Best. He\u2019s a prickly Boston surgeon who finds himself surrounded by overly friendly small-town types. After a childhood trauma resurfaces to emotionally derail his ability to operate, the buttoned-up Best hits reset by moving to the coastal hamlet of Port Wenn, Maine, where he reluctantly reconnects with his beloved and sassy Aunt Sarah (Annie Potts<\/a>), whom he hasn\u2019t seen since med school.<\/p>\n \u201cHe used to spend his summers with me,\u201d the eternally breezy Young Sheldon<\/a><\/em> alum explains of their long estrangement. \u201cBut then, I was too naughty for his father. He considered me to be a bad influence and wouldn\u2019t let him come see me anymore. So now he comes back, and he\u2019s just difficult and curmudgeonly and cynical.\u201d<\/p>\n Not exactly the bedside manner one looks for in a local doctor, but that doesn\u2019t stop Port Wenn\u2019s nosy, neighborly residents from trying to see, well, the best in Best\u2026 or at the very least, attempting to involve him in their personal lives, often via their varied ailments.<\/p>\n \u201cA lot of times there\u2019s going to be a medical mystery that he can\u2019t help but want to solve, and it will always somehow drag him into the lives of the townspeople,\u201d offers showrunner Liz Tuccillo<\/a>. \u201cSo it\u2019s not like we\u2019re not<\/em> doing House<\/em>, where he figures out this crazy disease. It\u2019s that he\u2019s trying to figure out what\u2019s wrong with the person while having to get involved in some shenanigans that he doesn\u2019t want to have to get involved in.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIn a comedic sense, from Martin\u2019s point of view, he\u2019s in a horror movie,\u201d laughs Charles about the show\u2019s premise. \u201cThis is honestly his worst nightmare, to have to just deal with people.\u201d<\/p>\n Like the quirkiest of TV\u2019s small towns, those people, \u201cas invasive as they are, are still charming and fun,\u201d adds executive producer Rodney Ferrell<\/a>. By the end of the first hour, Martin may still be far from sold on Port Wenn\u2019s weirdos. But he has been drawn into a patient\u2019s unexpectedly ribald marital issues, confounded by his flaky, aspiring-influencer secretary Elaine (Cree), unofficially adopted by a stray dog, and targeted by three meme-speaking teens who hilariously \u201cantagonize Martin throughout every episode,\u201d Ferrell reveals. \u201cThey become his little foes.\u201d<\/p>\n While Doc Martin<\/em>\u2018s 2004 to 2022 run provides 10 seasons of story, Tuccillo and Ferrell are not interested in a cut-and-paste copy of the source material. \u201cThis is an amazing opportunity to steal whatever we want from the original \u2014 because we were allowed to \u2014 but then also make it our own,\u201d Tuccillo states. (To that end, they recruited O.G. star Clunes to pass the torch with a guest role as Martin\u2019s chilly father. Stage vet Judith Ivey<\/a> plays his mom.) One aspect of the British version still intact, however, is the central will-they-or-won\u2019t-they situation between Martin and schoolteacher Louisa (Abigail Spencer<\/a>) that fires up in the pilot\u2019s opening minutes.<\/p>\n Francisco Roman \/ Fox<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThey start off very much on the wrong foot,\u201d Spencer notes of their anti-meet-cute. \u201cShe thinks that he\u2019s rude and arrogant and not telling the whole truth and not a right fit for Port Wenn.\u201d Fresh off a broken engagement to sweetly dim Sheriff Mark (Josh Segarra<\/a>), Louisa is also intrigued by the socially brash but brilliant Best, setting the stage for an odd coupling that the Timeless<\/a><\/em> favorite likens to \u201cthe flavor of all the great \u201980s and \u201990s rom-coms I love.\u201d<\/p>\n Winning over the citizens of Port Wenn is one thing. Whether or not audiences will fall for this potential combo depends a lot on that tricky balance Charles mentioned of making sure his version of Martin comes off as a grouch with a gooey center. \u201cWe love the acerbic-ness of him. It\u2019s part of his character, it\u2019s part of his charm,\u201d offers Ferrell. \u201cBut deep down inside, he cares about these people. He cares about their well-being, and, like we said, they grow on him.\u201d<\/p>\n Charles agrees. \u201cI think you do see his humanity in his actions at certain times. You see these glimpses of it. He has a big heart,\u201d he says.
