Wyle said that Robby\u2019s ability to show compassion to his patients without becoming too overwhelmed is by remembering he\u2019s not the one in need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe patient\u2019s the one with the problem. That\u2019s what they tell you in med school. \u2026They\u2019re the one who\u2019s sick\u2026they\u2019re the one who\u2019s in pain, not you,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2026It\u2019s part of what allows you to\u2026not take it on. You put up a wall, saying, \u2018It\u2019s not me, it\u2019s them. I can help them, but I\u2019m not them.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cI think doctors who are compassionate people have a really difficult time navigating that sense of compassion over the long term,\u201d he added. \u201cThe more you open yourself up to those human stories, to those tragedies that you\u2019re attending four times an hour, and you take those people on and into your psyche, the more you\u2019re going to need to have a way of bleeding that off down the line, otherwise, you\u2019re going to be a pressure cooker that\u2019s going to pop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Robby might know exactly what to do for his patients, he\u2019s not quite willing to show himself the same level of compassion. His decision to go on a sabbatical might seem like an effort to get himself under control, but Wyle thinks that it\u2019s possibly another way to run away from his issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think the answers are out there for him.
