However, new emails emerged last September and showed Fergie had kept in touch with the convicted paedophile until April 2011. She called him her \u201csteadfast, generous and supreme friend\u201d and \u201chumbly apologised\u201d for her public remarks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Following the furore, her spokesperson has said she was \u201ctaken in by his lies\u201d and sent the email only to avoid the threat of defamation.<\/p>\n
The spokesman said: \u201cThe Duchess spoke of her regret about her association with Epstein many years ago, and as they have always been, her first thoughts are with his victims. Like many people, she was taken in by his lies.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs soon as she was aware of the extent of the allegations against him, she not only cut off contact but condemned him publicly, to the extent that he then threatened to sue her for defamation for associating him with paedophilia. She does not resile from anything she said then.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis email was sent in the context of advice the Duchess was given to try to assuage Epstein and his threats.\u201d<\/p>\n
But the damage was already done as several of Fergie\u2019s charities severed ties with her, while the King also axed her of her Duchess of York title. She is also expected to vacate Royal Lodge this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
