Hilary Duff<\/strong><\/a> opened up about cutting ties with friends months before drama ensued surrounding Ashley Tisdale French\u2019<\/strong><\/a>s essay about a \u201ctoxic\u201d mom group.<\/p>\n

When asked on a November 2025 episode of the \u201cTherapuss\u201d<\/a> podcast whether \u201ctrusting people [was] hard\u201d for her at an early age, Duff, 38, replied, \u201cYeah, there was a few people where I was like, \u2018Oh I think that person is not trustworthy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always had a really good gauge of people. I think it\u2019s, like, a little talent that I have. I have really good friends and it doesn\u2019t take me long to figure someone out or just figure out that someone\u2019s not for me,\u201d she continued, noting that she didn\u2019t \u201crun in a huge group of celebs\u201d growing up. \u201cI think that was also very good for my health back then. I wasn\u2019t, like, spilling out the clubs with other teen stars and stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere on the podcast, host Jake Shane<\/strong> asked Duff whether she would call herself \u201cthe mom\u201d of her friend group, to which she admitted she was \u2014 but added that people don\u2019t always come to her for their problems.<\/p>\n

Us Weekly can confirm Duff, 40, \u201cliked\u201d a joint Instagram post from both French, 40, and The Cut promoting an essay detailing the High School Musical star\u2019s experience with a group of friends. \u201cLEAVE YOUR TOXIC FRIENDS [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI think that a lot of us hold that space for each other, like, to where we could come with problems, but I\u2019m just very direct. Maybe a little too much sometimes,\u201d she said, adding that she doesn\u2019t \u201clike to fight with people\u201d but doesn\u2019t \u201clike to have a rub with someone or something and not work through it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cThat drives me crazy. It infiltrates every aspect of my life so I need to like handle my s***.\u201d<\/p>\n

Duff went on to note that a \u201cfriendship breakup\u201d can \u201cpossibly be worse than a breakup breakup.\u201d Duff explained that sometimes \u201cyou have to friend cleanse,\u201d adding, \u201cIt\u2019s OK to edit. But you feel like a bad person when you\u2019re doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to just own it and be like, \u2018I can\u2019t show up for you in this capacity right now. It feels overwhelming. And, blah blah blah. Like, I need some space,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve had to do it a few times. I just always want my side of the street to be clean. You know what I mean? I don\u2019t want to make anyone feel bad by my actions. I\u2019d rather have a conversation about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAshley Tisdale French\u2019s unfiltered commentary on being iced out of a \u201ctoxic\u201d mom group has caught the attention of many fellow celebrities. In January 2026, Ashley \u2014 who shares two daughters with husband Christopher French \u2014 raised eyebrows with an essay for The Cut titled \u201cBreaking Up With My Toxic Mom Group\u201d as she candidly [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Duff\u2019s comments have since resurfaced after French\u2019s January 1 essay for The Cut<\/em> \u2014 where she wrote about feeling excluded by an unnamed group of moms in her California neighborhood \u2014- went viral.<\/p>\n

While French did not name the mom group she was referring to, rumors began to swirl that she was alluding to friendships with fellow celebrities Duff, Mandy Moore<\/strong>, Meghan Trainor<\/strong> and more.<\/p>\n

French\u2019s rep denied the rumors <\/a>in a Monday, January 5, statement to TMZ<\/em>. The rep also noted that French wanted her piece to highlight an issue other women and moms can relate to. (Us Weekly<\/em> reached out to Duff and French\u2019s teams for comment at the time.)<\/p>\n
