Oh, so Billy Strings and Bryan Sutton are going to do a new version of the song called \u201cThe Devil Went Down To Deep Gap\u201d swapping a golden guitar for the devil\u2019s golden fiddle that\u2019s going to blow so much air up our skirts we\u2019re going to forget we\u2019ve heard this tune two hundred thousand million times? <\/p>
Well, that\u2019s kind of exactly what they did. <\/p>
\u201cThe Devil Went Down To Deep Gap\u201d isn\u2019t just a remake and tribute to the late great Charlie Daniels. It\u2019s really a [*SPOILER*]<\/strong> tribute to Doc Watson \u2026 and Del McCoury, and a crash course bluegrass history lesson [*SPOILER*]<\/strong> \u2026 and a bluegrass metal fusion song \u2026 and, and, and some other interesting, entertaining and informative things. Lot\u2019s of layers to this onion to peel off. <\/p>You start the song of thinking, \u201cOkay, this will be cute.\u201d But almost like the pinnacle line in David Allan Coe\u2019s \u201cThe Ride,\u201d the adrenaline starts pumping when everything starts to be revealed. And what really helps tie everything together is the animated video\u2014which by the way, more artists should splurge for as opposed to the sappy, acted out videos barely anyone pays attention to anyway. <\/p>
Also hats off to Sam Bush on mandolin, T. Michael Coleman on bass, and Jerry Roe on drums. And yes, that is Billy Strings and Bryan Sutton ripping into the devil\u2019s heavy metal parts, showing off the pair\u2019s range when it comes to pickin\u2019 and shreddin\u2019. <\/p>
Not saying this guarantee\u2019s the pair a Grammy award or anything. But in a moment when the world is looking for a distraction from world-shaking events, \u201cThe Devil Went Down To Deep Gap\u201d will more than do. <\/p>
