The beloved HBO Max crime drama \u201cMare of Easttown\u201d <\/b>was billed as a miniseries, but it now seems that a second season is in the works.<\/p>\n

Kate Winslet, who stars as Mare Sheehan, shared a promising update about the show during an interview with Deadline <\/a>published Thursday, Jan 8. The Oscar winner said that \u201cMare of \u201cEasttown\u201d was originally \u201cdone and dusted\u201d after season 1 aired in 2021, but she\u2019s recently had \u201csome conversations\u201d about resurrecting it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were proper conversations around a timeframe when it could be possible. And so I think we probably will do it, and that\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve felt that,\u201d Winslet said. \u201c[It] wouldn\u2019t actually be this year, I reckon it would end up being 2027 to film it. There\u2019s a strong likelihood it would film sometime in 2027.\u201d<\/p>\n

Season 1 of \u201cMare of Easttown\u201d followed the titular detective as she investigated the murder of a teenage mother in a small Philadelphia suburb. Mare was also dealing with significant personal strife: her son\u2019s death, a custody battle for her grandson, and blowback for failing to solve a previous murder. <\/p>\n

The gritty, twisty murder mystery was nominated for six Emmy awards. Winslet and Evan Peters, who played Mare\u2019s partner Colin Zabel, both won Emmys for their roles. <\/p>\n

\u201cMare of Easttown\u201d creator Brad Ingelsby is the brain behind another popular HBO show, the Mark Ruffalo-led crime drama \u201cTask,\u201d which premiered in September 2025. The series was renewed for a second season<\/a> in November 2025. It was shot in some of the same locations that Ingelsby used for \u201cMare of Easttown.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up here. I know these streets. I don\u2019t want to run from that,\u201d Ingelsby told TheWrap <\/a>in September 2025. \u201cThese are the people I know. These are the lives that I\u2019m close to. So, I don\u2019t want to run from \u2018Mare of Easttown.\u2019 I don\u2019t want to do the same thing as \u2018Mare,\u2019 but I\u2019m OK with [\u2019Task\u2019] looking like \u2018Mare.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The screenwriter also told the outlet why he took a break from \u201cMare of Easttown.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things I really struggled with was I felt like \u2018Mare\u2019 was such an emotional journey, and every time I tried to think of what would happen next in Mare\u2019s life, it was always less than that,\u201d Ingelsby said. \u201cAnd then it was like, is the second season going to be another murder in a small town? And what\u2019s the new trauma that Mare has to deal with that is comparable to that? That was a tough thing. Kate, out of all of us, smartly was like, \u2018If it\u2019s not going to be as good, I don\u2019t want to do it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Now that some time has passed, Ingelsby is more able to imagine a future for Mare. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe have talked about what would Mare look like six years later or something,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s interesting to me, because you can have all this time to build up new things in her life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMare of Easttown\u201d is <\/b><\/i>available to stream on HBO Max<\/b><\/i><\/a>.<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n
