Hollywood\u2019s awards season is underway with the 83rd Golden Globe Awards<\/a>, happening now.<\/p>\n Comedian Nikki Glaser returns<\/a> for a second year to host the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. It\u2019s a Champagne-soaked party featuring some of the biggest names in film and television<\/a>, even if the awards won\u2019t exactly forecast the Oscars<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d topped the list of nominations with nine, closely followed by \u201cSentimental Value\u201d with eight. \u201cWicked: For Good\u201d was snubbed for best picture and best director. And we are our own narrator to our life.\u201d<\/p>\n The elephant in the ballroom<\/p>\n Some of the entertainment industry\u2019s biggest players are competing for much more than a statuette this awards season. Tonight, they\u2019re doing it on one company\u2019s home turf.<\/p>\n The elephant in the ballroom is sure to be the dueling bids for Warner Bros. Discovery, which is behind some of this year\u2019s leading contenders with films \u201cSinners\u201d and \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d as well as TV hit \u201cThe White Lotus.\u201d<\/p>\n Netflix and Paramount have each made offers for the storied Hollywood studio. But Warner Bros. this week again rejected Paramount\u2019s $77.9 billion hostile takeover<\/a> of the entire company, urging shareholders to back its $72 billion deal with Netflix for its streaming and studio business.<\/p>\n Whether Paramount gains ownership over its rival\u2019s extensive content library remains to be seen. But, at the least, company executives will have cinephiles\u2019 eyeballs tonight: The Golden Globes are televised live on Paramount-owned CBS<\/a>.<\/p>\n How many first-time nominees are there?<\/p>\n Per the Globes themselves, 27. But unlike others, Jafar Panahi<\/a> is facing a yearlong prison sentence<\/a> and two-year travel ban for \u201cpropaganda activities\u201d against the Iranian government.<\/p>\n It\u2019s not his first time; he\u2019s been jailed for his work before in Tehran\u2019s infamous Evin Prison<\/a>, and was banned from making movies in Iran until 2023.<\/p>\n But he made films anyway, and his time in the prison system inspired his latest film, \u201cIt Was Just an Accident,\u201d<\/a> which has already snagged awards, including Cannes\u2019 prized Palme d\u2019Or.<\/a><\/p>\n The film is nominated for four Golden Globe awards: best drama, director, screenplay and foreign-language film.<\/p>\n The juke joint women stick together<\/p>\n The ballroom is open and \u201cSinners\u201d stars Li Jun Li and Jayme Lawson arrived together early at the \u201cSinners\u201d table and were quickly served some Nobu.<\/p>\n Nikki Glaser kicks off hosting duties in pink<\/p>\n The evening\u2019s host, Nikki Glaser, began her likely multi-change fashion marathon in Zuhair Murad.
