The 83rd Golden Globes<\/a> got underway Sunday with a pointedly political opening from host Nikki Glaser and an early award for the night’s favorite, \u201cOne Battle After Another.\u201d<\/p>\n Glaser, emceeing the show for the second straight year,<\/a> kicked off the Beverly Hills, California, award show on a note of self-aware satire.<\/p>\n \u201cYes, the Golden Globes, without a doubt the most important thing happening in the world right now,\u201d Glaser said.<\/p>\n In a winning, rapid-fire opening monologue that landed some punch lines on the usual subjects \u2014 the age of Leonardo DiCaprio’s dates, Kevin Hart’s height \u2014 Glaser also dove right into some of her most topical material.<\/p>\n For the on-the-block Warner Bros., Glaser started the bidding at $5. Referencing the Epstein files, she suggested best editing should go to the Justice Dept. The \u201cmost editing,\u201d however, she suggested deserved to go to Bari Weiss’ new CBS News \u2014 a dig at the Paramount Skydance-owned network airing the Globes.<\/p>\n The night’s first award went to Teyana Taylor for her explosive supporting performance in \u201cOne Battle After Another.\u201d<\/a> A teary-eyed Taylor took the stage and accepted what could be the first of many awards for Paul Thomas Anderson’s film.<\/p>\n \u201cTo my brown sisters and little brown girls watching tonight, our softness is not a liability. Our depth is not too much. Our light does not need permission to shine. We belong in every room we walk into. There, Ryan Coogler\u2019s \u201cSinners,\u201d<\/a> Chlo\u00e9 Zhao\u2019s \u201cHamnet\u201d<\/a> and Joachim Trier\u2019s \u201cSentimental Value\u201d<\/a> are all in the mix.<\/p>\n If \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d and \u201cSinners\u201d take home the two biggest prizes, it will be a banner night for Warner Bros. even as its future hangs in the balance. In best actor, comedy or musical, he\u2019ll have to beat DiCaprio, a three-time Globe winner, and Ethan Hawke (\u201cBlue Moon\u201d).<\/p>\n In best female actor, comedy or musical, Rose Byrne<\/a> is the favorite for her performance in the not especially funny A24 indie \u201cIf I Had Legs I\u2019d Kick You.\u201d One prominent nominee in the category, Cynthia Erivo (\u201cWicked: For Good\u201d), won\u2019t be attending due to her schedule in the West End production \u201cDracula.\u201d<\/p>\n Jessie Buckley (\u201cHamnet\u201d) is the clear front-runner in best female actor, drama. In the star-studded best actor, drama, category, the Brazilian actor Wagner Moura (\u201cThe Secret Agent\u201d) may win over Michael B. Jordan (\u201cSinners\u201d) and Joel Edgerton (\u201cTrain Dreams\u201d).<\/p>\n The Globes, formerly presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, have no overlap or direct correlation with the Academy Awards<\/a>. After being sold in 2023 to Todd Boehly\u2019s Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions, a part of Penske Media, the Globes are voted on by around 400 people. The Oscars are voted on by more than 10,500 professionals.<\/p>\n But in the fluctuating undulations of awards season, a good speech at the Globes can really boost an Oscar campaign. Last year, that seemed to be the case for Demi Moore, who won for \u201cThe Substance\u201d and gave the night’s most emotional speech<\/a>. There, the Cecil B. DeMille and Carol Burnett honorees, Helen Mirren and Sarah Jessica Parker, accepted their awards.<\/p>\n One to watch, if he wins, will be the Iranian director Jafar Panahi<\/a>. His revenge drama \u201cIt Was Just an Accident\u201d is up for four awards. Panahi has spent most of his career making films clandestinely, without approval of authorities, and was until recently banned from leaving the country. Last month, he was sentenced to a year in prison, which would be only his latest stint behind bars if Panahi returns home to serve it. This week, protests over Iran\u2019s ailing economy have spread throughout the country<\/a> in a new test to Iran’s leaders.<\/p>\n For the first time, the Globes are trotting out a new podcast category. The nominees are: \u201cArmchair Expert,\u201d \u201cCall Her Daddy,\u201d \u201cGood Hang With Amy Poehler,\u201d \u201cThe Mel Robbins Podcast,\u201d \u201cSmartLess\u201d and \u201cUp First.\u201d<\/p>\n In TV, HBO Max\u2019s \u201cThe White Lotus\u201d<\/a> \u2014 another potential big winner for Warner Bros. \u2014 came in with a leading six nominations. Netflix\u2019s \u201cAdolescence\u201d<\/a> comes in with five nods.<\/p>\n The individual winners included some veterans \u2014 Jean Smart (\u201cHacks\u201d), Noah Wyle (\u201cThe Pitt\u201d) \u2014 and some newbies ( Owen Cooper,<\/a> the 16-year-old star of \u201cAdolescence\u201d). The most comically poignant award of the night went to Seth Rogen, whose Hollywood satire \u201cThe Studio\u201d<\/a> memorably included an episode devoted to drama around a night at the Globes.
