\n The annual awards show is known for having flowing booze, which often helps lubricate the acceptance speeches, but things were oddly calm this year.\n <\/p>\n
\n Absent were any sloppy moments or off-the-cuff interactions. Winners were also largely quiet on the political situation inside the country, giving the whole thing a muted tone.\n <\/p>\n
\n Has the awards show become more conservative or was Hollywood simply leaning into the joy the world desperately seems to need right now?\n <\/p>\n
\n In the olden days, celebs would wear sunglasses inside the show \u2014 more to hide their clear enjoyment of the libations than to look cool.\n <\/p>\n
\n Jack Nicholson was wearing a pair when he announced \u201cI took a valium tonight\u201d back in 2003. A decade later, hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler held their own drinks up to the camera while Fey joked, \u201cLook how drunk Glenn Close is,\u201d as noted in a video<\/a> by The Wrap titled \u201cDrunken Globes: One Minute of \u2018Golden\u2019 Boozy Moments.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n And who can forget Cate Blanchett\u2019s admission <\/a>after winning best actress in a drama for \u201cBlue Jasmine\u201d in 2014 that since her \u201ccategory came up rather later in the evening,\u201d she was \u201ca couple of sheets to the wind.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n celebrity.land\u2019s Stephanie Elam was in the room Sunday night and said that while she saw a few stars with \u201cwobbly footsteps\u201d towards the end of the show, it was more about folks catching up and making sure to hit the side room for sushi, dessert and cocktails.\n <\/p>\n \n The muted vibe might track with the turmoil outside the ballroom, as the country reckons with the killing<\/a> of Renee Nicole Good by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis, President Donald Trump\u2019s assault<\/a> on Venezuela and spiraling protests<\/a> in Iran.\n <\/p>\n \n While some \u2014 including Ariana Grande, Natasha Lyonne and Tessa Thompson \u2014 wore \u201cBe Good\u201d or \u201cICE Out\u201d pins in the wake of Good\u2019s killing, statements were relegated to the red carpet.\n <\/p>\n \n Actor Mark Ruffalo, who was nominated for best male actor in a television drama for his work in \u201cTask,\u201d told USA Today<\/a> that the pin was for Good and \u201cthe people in the United States who are terrorized and scared today.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cI know I\u2019m one of \u2018em,\u201d he said on the red carpet. \u201cI love this country and what I\u2019m seeing here happening is not America.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n He also called out Trump over Venezuela.<\/a>\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cWe\u2019re in the middle of a war with Venezuela that we illegally invaded,\u201d said Ruffalo, who is known to use social media to speak his mind about politics. \u201cHe\u2019s telling the world that international law doesn\u2019t matter to him.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n Asked on the red carpet about shooting the latest season of \u201cHacks,\u201d Jean Smart told<\/a> \u201cEntertainment Tonight\u201d that \u201ceverything is a little bit overshadowed with everything that\u2019s going on in our country.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cI feel like we\u2019re kind of at a turning point in our country, and I hope people can keep their heads, because I think that\u2019s actually going to be the hardest thing, to keep our heads,\u201d she said. \u201cBut that\u2019s going to take a lot of courage and a lot of restraint, but I think that\u2019s important.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n Smart pointed to her words during her acceptance speech after once again winning the best actress in a TV comedy award.\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cThere\u2019s so much that could be said tonight. I said my rant on the red carpet, so I won\u2019t do it here,\u201d she said on stage. \u201cLet\u2019s all do the right thing. I think everybody in their hearts knows what the right thing is to do, so let\u2019s do the right thing.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n Host Nikki Glaser touched on some political issues during her opening monologue, getting in a jab about the Epstein files<\/a>.\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cI cannot believe the amount of star power we have in this room tonight, it\u2019s insane. There\u2019s so many A-listers.
