The <\/span>2026 Golden Globes<\/span><\/a> may be over, but it\u2019s still got folks talking about all the best, worst and <\/span>most shocking moments<\/span><\/a> of the evening \u2014 and trust, there were quite a few. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

On Sunday night, Hollywood\u2019s annual celebration of television, film and now, apparently, podcasting, hosted by comedian <\/span>Nikki Glaser<\/span><\/a>, handed out top honors to <\/span>winners<\/span><\/a> like \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d \u201cHamnet,\u201d \u201cThe Pitt,\u201d \u201cAdolescence,\u201d \u201cThe Studio\u201d and more to highlight another solid year in entertainment. However, the big upset of the night \u2014 arguably the first major shock of awards season \u2014 seems to still be on a lot of people\u2019s minds (and timelines).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I\u2019m talking about \u201cSinners,\u201d the most buzzed-about movie of 2025 and one of the least-awarded at the Golden Globes this year \u2014 a sentence I hoped I wouldn\u2019t have to write post-show,<\/span> but here we are. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Expectations were high going into the 83rd annual ceremony. Ryan Coogler\u2019s celebrated horror smash entered the night with seven nominations, including a career-first Best Male Actor nod for Michael B. Jordan. It seemed many people were hoping to see just as many wins for the acclaimed film, or at least something close to that. Instead, \u201cSinners\u201d walked away with just two wins, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Original Score (the latter of which <\/span>wasn\u2019t even televised<\/span><\/a>, which viewers were <\/span>quick to call out<\/span><\/a>), while missing out in marquee categories like Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Picture – Drama.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The response online was swift and unforgiving, with folks expressing confusion, frustration and outright anger over what they viewed as glaring mistakes by the Globes.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Up until Sunday night, \u201cSinners\u201d appeared to be a clear awards front-runner, poised to dominate with its ever-growing pile of nominations. On Monday, it received a whopping <\/span>18 nods from the NAACP Image Awards<\/span><\/a>. Now, however, folks are tempering their optimism, bracing for what the rest of this awards race may hold.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

While the Golden Globes\u2019 results were a bit surprising \u2014 especially given the <\/span>cultural impact<\/span><\/a> of \u201c<\/span>Sinners\u201d and its aggressive awards push \u2014 the film\u2019s treatment ultimately reflects a familiar pattern in how Black art is acknowledged in Hollywood, yet still overlooked on these prestigious industry stages. This, unfortunately, has become our annual reality check.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Every awards season, we\u2019re reminded that institutions like the Golden Globes \u2014 which has its own <\/span>history of controversies and racist allegations<\/span><\/a> \u2014 and their governing bodies were not built to fully celebrate work that centers Black voices and Black stories. Sure, we can get the nominations, even though that\u2019s still an uphill battle in itself, but wins are, sadly, a different story.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

What makes these \u201cSinners\u201d losses particularly galling for some, though, is the fact that the film has seemingly done everything right by Hollywood\u2019s standards \u2014 delivered powerhouse performances, defied box-office odds, dominated cultural discourse (well past its release) and earned widespread critical acclaim, even from <\/span>Hollywood\u2019s elite<\/span><\/a>. And yet, for the Globes\u2019 voting body, that still wasn\u2019t enough to prevail over films like \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d or \u201cHamnet.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

And sure, those films have undoubtedly resonated with audiences in their own ways, but the question remains: What does it say when a movie so profoundly shifts pop culture and <\/span>still<\/span><\/em> fails to secure top honors on merit alone? Is that truly a reflection of what the industry considers \u201cthe best\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In hindsight, the Golden Globes aren\u2019t the end-all, be-all for awards season, nor does Sunday\u2019s outcome necessarily decide the fate of \u201cSinners\u201d moving forward. The film remains a strong contender at <\/span>SAG\u2019s Actor Awards<\/span><\/a> in March, where it\u2019s up for five awards, and it has <\/span>good projections heading into the Oscar nominations<\/span><\/a> next week.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Still, regardless of how many trophies \u201cSinners\u201d ultimately collects, its cultural imprint is already cemented among audiences who continue to champion the film. And that, by all accounts, seems to matter far more to the cast and crew than any statuette ever could.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

During an interview at a screening for his film, Coogler told me he wasn\u2019t sure \u201cpeople were going to connect with \u2018Sinners,\u2019\u201d much less show up in droves to see it in theaters again, again and <\/span>again<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI just want to thank the audience for showing up. It means the world,\u201d the director said in his Globes acceptance speech.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

At the end of the day, this award season will pass, and these conversations about industry accolades will become a thing of the past. The only thing that\u2019ll matter then is whether or not \u201cSinners\u201d stands the test of time. Because there is no greater reward than longevity.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
