It has grown significantly from its humble roots in the early 20th century. Here is the history of the fair and the fairgrounds, from a Post Time column by Eliot Kleinberg that ran Jan. 11, 2018.<\/em><\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/>\n<p>For Palm Beach County residents, and especially youngsters, the new year also means the\u00a0South Florida\u00a0Fair.<\/p>\n<p>But going to the fair hasn&#8217;t always meant traveling to its eponymous current location, west of\u00a0Florida&#8217;s Turnpike on Southern Boulevard. It moved there on Jan. 27, 1958. The county, split from Dade only three years earlier, wanted a forum to show off its winter crops, livestock and booming real estate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/><partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>The town&#8217;s godfather, Henry Flagler, sweetened the pot by offering cash prizes for farmers and others who displayed their wares. The\u00a0fair\u00a0moved the following year to a site just to the north, near the railroad depot.<\/p>\n<p>The Depression hit\u00a0hard\u00a0and the\u00a0fair\u00a0was reduced to a carnival midway from 1930 until 1937, then is believed to have shut down all together. Later that year, the\u00a0fair&#8217;s\u00a0corporation bought the speedway property, about\u00a035 acres. The\u00a0fair\u00a0opened on its new grounds Jan. 27, 1958, and was promptly assaulted by a small tornado that blew down six tents but hurt no one. The Coral Sky Amphitheatre, capacity 20,000, opened in 1995.
