Its native language has little in common with that of its neighbours Sweden and Russia; its topography is bizarre, with more than 180,000 lakes to fall into after too much liquorice vodka; and it\u2019s the most <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/tag\/hevay-metal\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/tag\/hevay-metal\">heavy metal<\/a> country per capita in the world.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<aside data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"hawk-root\"\/>\n<p id=\"3d6a8f90-2e67-4fe0-adae-769c7379817a-1\">\u201cWhy are we so metal? I\u2019ve thought about this a lot,\u201d says Olli-Pekka Laine, bassist with the Helsinki-based prog-metal sextet Amorphis. \u201cI think it\u2019s because most pop and rock bands never came here in the 70s and 80s. We\u2019re a ferry trip away from Stockholm and it was time-consuming to come over to play here. It\u2019s strange to connect metal with depression; I don\u2019t see it that way. I think metal is joyful music, and so is prog.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ah, the P-word. By any definition Amorphis are a prog band these days, loading unusual time signatures, virtuoso melodic passages and cosmic themes into latest album <em>Borderland<\/em>. Like their last few records, the new one takes the bloodthirsty death metal riffs and gargles with which they debuted on <em>The Karelian Isthmus<\/em> (1992) and adds a ton of progressive equivalent act such as, say, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/opeth-blackwater-park\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/opeth-blackwater-park\">Opeth<\/a>. There\u2019s a lot to enjoy in the new songs, with <em>Tempest<\/em> a pastoral acoustic ballad, <em>The Lantern<\/em> a cinematic epic with Vangelis-style synth warbles, and <em>Despair<\/em> a beautiful, melancholy anthem.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also a jaunty pop-rock tune called <em>Dancing Shadow<\/em>, which sticks out a bit because it\u2019s so cheerful, at least by Amorphis\u2019 standards. Are they aiming at the charts with this one? \u201cNo, it\u2019s more to do with the general open-mindedness of the band,\u201d Laine says. \u201cIt\u2019s not that we want to flirt with the mainstream; although if that leads to some kind of success, of course, we don\u2019t have anything against it. Their fans come from numerous demographics, including your regular headbangers in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/slayer-vs-slayer-battle-of-the-bands-interview\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/slayer-vs-slayer-battle-of-the-bands-interview\">Slayer<\/a> battle jackets, of course, but also a more select crew of followers of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/top-10-most-underrated-pink-floyd-songs\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/top-10-most-underrated-pink-floyd-songs\">Pink Floyd<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/how-yes-helped-shape-the-1970s\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/how-yes-helped-shape-the-1970s\">Yes<\/a> schools. Pink Floyd are really important to me, especially their 70s stuff, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/bands-artists\/emerson-lake-palmer-failures\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/bands-artists\/emerson-lake-palmer-failures\">Emerson, Lake &amp; Palmer<\/a>\u2019s <em>Trilogy<\/em> is one of my favourite records ever. Also <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/ten-cool-king-crimson-songs-from-the-80s\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/ten-cool-king-crimson-songs-from-the-80s\">King Crimson<\/a>\u2019s albums, until <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/king-crimson-red\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/king-crimson-red\"><em>Red<\/em><\/a> or thereabouts. When I first heard <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/why-i-king-crimsons-in-the-court-of-the-crimson-king-by-steve-stevens\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/why-i-king-crimsons-in-the-court-of-the-crimson-king-by-steve-stevens\"><em>In The Court Of The Crimson King<\/em><\/a>, it changed my life because it was such mind-blowing stuff. It was catchy, it was beautiful, and it was still really complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He gets even more into the subject when we ask him to recommend some Finnish prog. \u201cFirst, Wigwam,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s one of the most important bands in Finland, because they did some great albums in the 70s.
