Jan 13. At 10 p.m.), six people from the regular world are sent to go live in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/01\/15\/lifestyle\/i-was-raised-amish-i-didnt-wear-pants-or-get-my-hair-cut-for-26-years\/\">Amish society<\/a>. For Billie Jo, 44, the experience was a lifelong dream come true.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have always been intrigued and always been interested in the Amish lifestyle, since I was a young kid,\u201d she told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw Amish [people] at farmers markets, and had curiosity. As I grew up, I learned about how the Amish lived their life, and there was some peace to that that I really admired and was so curious about\u2026.I realized, I think that\u2019s the lifestyle that I want to live.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Billie Jo on \u201cSuddenly Amish.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">TLC<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The regular people joining the Amish world on \u201cSuddenly Amish,\u201d Esme, Kendra, Judah, Matt, Billie Jo, and Aaron.  <span class=\"credit\">TLC<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>In the outside world, Billie Jo was a barista in Ithaca, New York. (She didn\u2019t reveal if she\u2019s still a barista or if she\u2019s now integrated in the Amish community, as that\u2019s a spoiler for the show).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a lifestyle others that I have around me think they would want to do,\u201d she explained. \u201cI stood out a bit, even among my friends and family and coworkers.\u00a0 Everybody is like, \u2018why would you want to be Amish?\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cSuddenly Amish\u201d star added, \u201cFor me, it\u2019s a community that is religiously based and filled with love and support. I felt like I wanted to be a part of it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The show follows Billie Jo and five others as they leave behind their \u201cEnglish\u201d lifestyle (as the Amish call outsiders) and join an Amish community in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.\u00a0Amish youths traditionally embark on a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2004\/07\/21\/amish-idols-how-ya-gonna-keep-em-down-on-the-farm\/\">\u201cRumspringa,\u201d<\/a> to briefly get a glimpse of the \u201cEnglish\u201d world, but the community rarely lets outsiders in.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Suddenly Amish on TLC.  <span class=\"credit\">TLC<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Billie Jo on \u201cSuddenly Amish.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">TLC<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In recent years, TikTok and Instagram has seen an influx of<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/12\/20\/lifestyle\/tiktok-ruined-my-husband-now-he-wants-a-tradwife\/\"> \u201ctrad wife\u201d influencers<\/a>, advocating for a more \u201ctraditional\u201d and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/31\/lifestyle\/ex-trad-wife-reveals-ugliness-behind-picture-perfect-lifestyle\/\">\u201csimple\u201d lifestyle.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Billie Jo said the \u201ctrad wife\u201d trend didn\u2019t impact her desire to be Amish, however.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have\u00a0desired to be Amish before Instagram. I don\u2019t think that fueled anything for me. People may think that it\u2019s a little strange, but for probably twenty years now, I have collected buggy wheels and quilts. This is something that was in my heart, way before social media.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She called herself a \u201cdifferent breed,\u201d and said, \u201cI\u2019ve never met anyone quite like me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Billoe Jo on \u201cSuddenly Amish.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">TLC<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A scene from \u201cSuddenly Amish.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">TLC<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the show, Billie Jo and the other \u201cEnglish\u201d people must get used to giving up technology, electricity, and makeup \u2013 including surprising inconveniences like having to use an outhouse instead of a bathroom.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m constantly learning new things. I know how the Amish dress\u2026I know that modesty is big. However, I\u2019m learning as I go, there\u2019s a lot of surprises in the Amish world.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the first episode, Billie Jo was dismayed when she had to use the bathroom and an Amish man directed her to an outhouse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess I don\u2019t know what I expected, but I certainly didn\u2019t expect that!\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Billoe Jo on \u201cSuddenly Amish.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">TLC<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She added that the \u201cbiggest adjustment\u201d was living without air conditioning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not your average \u2013 I\u2019m a heavyset girl, I rely on air conditioning,\u201d she explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe adjustment was seeing how my body was going to work in the heat without air conditioning. I knew I wouldn\u2019t have electricity, but I was like, \u2018I\u2019m in for it,with this.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She noted, \u201cThere are several moments where I definitely was wondering when I got myself into, for sure.
