Some \u201cLandman\u201d viewers are rolling their eyes at the Paramount+ show\u2019s newest character.<\/p>\n

During the Sunday, Jan. 11, episode, Ainsley Norris (Michelle Randolph) headed off to cheerleading camp at Texas Christian University, where she\u2019ll start college in the fall. She experienced some culture shock after meeting her roommate Paigyn (Bobbi Salv\u00f6r Menuez), a humorless vegan from Minneapolis who uses they\/them pronouns and has very specific requests for keeping the room a \u201csafe space\u201d to \u201csupport my mental health.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Ainsley informed Paigyn that she uses coconut oil as moisturizer because it \u201cpenetrates the deepest,\u201d Paigyn asked her not to use such \u201ctriggering\u201d verbs.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt insinuates the patriarchal power of the phallus,\u201d Paigyn said. <\/p>\n

The characterization of Paigyn as a leftist scold felt a little on the nose to some \u201cLandman\u201d fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cPaygin was just some sort of lib-bashing caricature that they dreamed up for no real reason. I went to art school and maybe some people exist who have some of those traits but no one who has all of them on steroids,\u201d one Reddit user<\/a> wrote. <\/p>\n

\u201cGood lord. The way Ainsley\u2019s roommate is portrayed is just ridiculous,\u201d another person agreed. \u201cPure rage bait.\u201d<\/p>\n

A third viewer specifically took issue with the \u201cline about the word penetration being triggering,\u201d calling it \u201cpeak cringe.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI run in the kind of circles that are being crudely caricatured here, and I\u2019ve never heard someone talk like that,\u201d the Reddit<\/a> user wrote. <\/p>\n

Others defended the writing, with one person arguing that people like Paigyn \u201cdo exist.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another person chimed in to say \u201cI think the characterization could be realistic of a person,\u201d but argued that the \u201cnon-binary killjoy joke is like 10 years tired at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLandman\u201d centers on Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton<\/a>), the president of fictional company M-Tex Oil. During season 2, Tommy reconnects with his aging father, T.L. Norris (Sam Elliott<\/a>), and struggles to navigate a new chapter at M-Tex. CEO Monty Miller (Jon Hamm) died at the end of season 1, leaving his wife Cami Miller (Demi Moore) and Tommy in charge. Tommy advises Cami against taking a chance on a high-risk offshore drilling operation, but Cami is determined to take big swings like her husband did.<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s Tommy\u2019s tumultuous relationship with his ex-wife Angela (Ali Larter). The pair, who are the parents of Ainsley and Cooper Norris (Jacob Lofland), rekindled their romance during season 1, but they seem to get into explosive fights nearly every episode. Some fans are fed up with Angela and Ainsley\u2019s arcs<\/a> on the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cAngela and the daughter are terrible, vapid ignoramuses, but the show tends to glorify them in a way they don\u2019t deserve,\u201d one viewer wrote via Reddit this week. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to tell if the show creators intend for us to see them as terrible people ala It\u2019s Always Sunny in Philadelphia or if we\u2019re supposed to root for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cLandman\u201d season 2 finale airs on Sunday, Jan. 18. While fans might be annoyed by some characters, they\u2019re still watching. The season 2 premiere was the biggest season opener in Paramount+ history, and the neo-Western has already been renewed for a third season.<\/p>\n
