WILLIAMSVILLE \u2014 The Rock River Players (RRP) will present a No Kings Cabaret on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 23 and 24, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 25, at 3 p.m. at the Williamsville Hall, 35 Dover Road.<\/p>\n
Producer Annie Landenberger notes that \u201cthe cabaret, with deep roots in France and Germany in the late 19th through early 20th century, has historically been a trend-setting form of entertainment featuring a variety of performance styles that\u2019s typically enjoyed from small caf\u00e9 tables \u2014 which we\u2019ll have.<\/p>\n
\u201cCabarets are usually adult focused with a heavy dose of subversion.\u201d Landenberger adds: \u201cThey\u2019ve been a hotbed of creative energy for well over a century, offering out-of-the-box perspective and material. With a collection of scenes, songs, satire, and surprises \u2014 and in keeping with the essence of the cabaret \u2014 the RRP evening promises laughs, epiphanies, pleasures, and provocations.\u201d<\/p>\n
This year the RRP annual cabaret will be infused with the satirical spine of the No Kings movement, but \u201crest assured,\u201d says Landenberger: \u201cthere\u2019ll be lots of laughs and love.\u201d<\/p>\n
This year’s Players\u2019 cabaret features Kay Beckett, Jonathan Benney, Tino Benson, Peter Broussard, Walter Cramer, Shafiya Finger, Sean Fitzharris, Eden Gorst, Sue Kelly, Alex Lacey, Annie Landenberger, Randy Lichtenwalner, Jon Mack, Stewart McDermet, Cherie Moran, John Moran, Nick Morgan, John Ogorzalek, Jeff Seabaugh, Dawn Slade, T. Breeze Verdant, Rose Watson, and Rev. Yolanda. Dan DeWalt is accompanist. Jess Guerrero is on lights.<\/p>\n
Among several acts on the program will be songs by a variety of composers including Tom Lehrer, Phil Ochs, Jonathan Larson, Craig Carnelia, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Bob Dylan, Stephen Schwartz, Kander and Ebb, and Howard Crabtree. There\u2019ll be a short improvisation set, original satire, revived satires \u2014 including a little Monty Python, “news” clips, and excerpts from Sinclair Lewis\u2019 prescient novel, “It Can\u2019t Happen Here.”<\/p>\n
Special guest Rev. Yolanda, a Windham-based trans femme gender queer singer\/songwriter\/performance artist and interfaith minister, will perform \u201cI Pledge Allegiance to Myself,\u201d about the power of loving oneself completely.<\/p>\n
Admission is $15 per person; seating is at caf\u00e9 tables, cabaret style. Various home baked goods will be available by donation. Cabaret goers are invited to bring whatever beverages they wish.
