\n\tIt\u2019s been a quiet start to the year in British pop music, but that\u2019s about to change. In an unexpected move, Robbie Williams<\/a> has surprise-released his new album, Britpop<\/em>, three weeks earlier than originally planned.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe road to the superstar\u2019s 13th studio album has already been full of twists and turns. First announced last May, the record was slated for release Oct. 10, though was then pushed back to Feb. 6 due to \u201cscheduling issues.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAt an intimate show <\/a>at London\u2019s Dingwalls venue Oct. 9, Williams admitted that this was actually due to avoid the arrival of Taylor Swift\u2019s The Life of a Showgirl <\/em><\/a>(Oct. 3) and its subsequent chart domination. \u201cWe\u2019re all pretending [the scheduling change] is not about Taylor Swift, but it f\u2013king is \u2014 you can\u2019t compete with that,\u201d Williams said on stage. \u201cI was worried about making [fans] all wait for the record. But then I was like, \u2018F\u2013k it.\u2019 I\u2019m sorry, but I\u2019m f\u2013king being selfish. How many times in your life do you get to have the most No. 1 albums the U.K. has f\u2013king ever had?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt was a shrewd decision: Swift\u2019s record remained atop the summit of the U.K.\u2019s Official Albums Chart<\/a> for three consecutive weeks upon release. If Britpop<\/em> hits the top spot on the chart dated Jan. 23, Williams will secure his 16th U.K. No. 1 on the Official Albums Chart, breaking a tie with The Beatles in the all-time rankings.<\/p>\n

\n\tNow, the album has arrived overnight on streaming services with no prior warning from Williams. The 11-track collection is largely inspired by the genre it\u2019s named after, centered around huge, guitar-driven hooks. Its artwork, meanwhile, nods to one of Williams\u2019 most iconic looks: the red tracksuit worn to Glastonbury Festival in 1995 when he partied with Oasis at the height of the Britpop era.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve worked with some of my heroes on this album; it\u2019s raw, there are more guitars and it\u2019s an album that\u2019s even more upbeat and anthemic than usual,\u201d Williams previously said in a statement. \u201cThere\u2019s some \u2018Brit\u2019 in there and there\u2019s certainly some \u2018pop\u2019 too \u2013 I\u2019m immensely proud of this as a body of work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBritpop<\/em> spans a multitude of lyrical themes, with musings on AI (\u201cHuman\u201d) and fame (\u201cAll My Life\u201d), plus \u201cMorrissey,\u201d a Pet Shop Boys-esque ode to The Smiths frontman, which Williams penned with his former Take That bandmate Gary Barlow. There\u2019s also \u201cRocket\u201d, a collaboration with Black Sabbath legend Tony Iommi and the psychedelic \u201cSpies,\u201d which houses a chord progression similar to the Oasis classic \u201cChampagne Supernova.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe album marks Williams\u2019 first set of non-festive original songs since 2016\u2019s The Heavy Entertainment Show<\/em>. He will support the release with a run of underplay shows across the U.K. Feb. 4-9, where he will play both 1997 debut Life Thru a Lens <\/em>and Britpop <\/em>in their entirety, hitting up venues in Glasgow, Liverpool, London and Wolverhampton.<\/p>\n
