Some milestone.<\/p>\n<p>According to new data from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/luminatedata.com\/reports\/yearend-music-industry-report-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luminate\u2019s new annual report<\/a>, that was up by <strong>37.9 million<\/strong> tracks YoY \u2013 an average of <strong>106,000 uploads<\/strong> per day.<\/p>\n<p>Most of this music was far from popular:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Almost half of the <strong>253 million<\/strong> files (<strong>120.5 million<\/strong>) hosted by audio platforms received fewer than ten streams last year.<\/li>\n<li>Almost three-quarters of it (<strong>73%<\/strong>) received fewer than <strong>100<\/strong> annual streams.<\/li>\n<li>And nearly nine-tenths of it (<strong>88%<\/strong>) received fewer than <strong>1,000<\/strong> annual streams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We\u2019re obviously a long, long way from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Apple [1,412 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/apple\/\">Apple<\/a>\u2018s promise to deliver <strong>\u201c1,000 songs in your pocket\u201d<\/strong> with the iPod.<\/p>\n<p>As AI-generated music proliferates, are we now just a few short years from the likes of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Spotify [4,603 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/spotify\/\">Spotify<\/a> hosting<strong>\u00a0\u201c1 billion songs in your pocket\u201d<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>And wouldn\u2019t such a tidal wave of content inevitably swamp digital services \u2013 while hurting artists, songwriters, and the<strong> perceived value of music<\/strong> amongst consumers?<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Universal Music Group [4,417 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/universal-music-group\/\">Universal Music Group<\/a> CEO and Chairman, <strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"People &gt; Sir Lucian Grainge [770 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/people\/sir-lucian-grainge\/\">Sir Lucian Grainge<\/a>,<\/strong> certainly thinks so\u2026 and he\u2019s keen to stop it happening.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, <strong>Grainge<\/strong> delivered a stark warning about AI-generated content overwhelming streaming platforms in his 2026 New Year address.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">\u201cValidating business models that fail to respect artists\u2019 work and creativity, and promote the exponential growth of <strong>AI slop<\/strong> on streaming platforms, is a grave disservice to artists, songwriters and all of us who work in music,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sir-lucian-grainge-talks-ai-music-superfans-in-2026-memo-taking-swipe-at-firms-validating-business-models-that-fail-to-respect-artists-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grainge wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">This warning wasn\u2019t theoretical.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Last year, Spotify <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-has-deleted-75m-spammy-tracks-as-it-unveils-new-ai-music-policies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">removed<\/a> over <strong>75 million \u2018spammy tracks\u2019<\/strong> from its platform, while rival <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Deezer [608 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/access-industries\/deezer\/\">Deezer<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/50000-ai-tracks-flood-deezer-daily-as-study-shows-97-of-listeners-cant-tell-the-difference-between-human-made-vs-fully-ai-generated-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported receiving<\/a> <strong>50,000<\/strong> fully AI-generated tracks <em>per day<\/em> by November \u2013 accounting for <strong>34%<\/strong> of all daily uploads.<\/p>\n<p>Yet despite this aggressive purging of content the total amount of music in the global audio-streaming ecosystem continued to soar in 2025.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Discussion around tracks that attract<strong>\u00a0fewer than 1,000 streams per year<\/strong> is, of course, particularly relevant here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Luminate [204 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/luminate\/\">Luminate<\/a>\u2018s new numbers help illustrate why \u2013 with UMG\u2019s encouragement \u2013 audio streaming services moved towards<strong> \u2018artist-centric\u2019-style payment models<\/strong> a couple of years ago\u2026 and why these models are now increasingly being stress-tested by AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">In early 2024, Spotify <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/heres-exactly-spotifys-new-1000-annual-streams-royalty-policy-works123\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced<\/a> a threshold requiring tracks to attract at least <strong>1,000<\/strong> plays in a <strong>12<\/strong>\u2013<strong>month<\/strong> period to qualify for royalty payouts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">At the time, Spotify said <strong>99.5% of streams on its platform<\/strong> went to tracks <strong>exceeding the 1,000 annual streams threshold<\/strong>. Under its new policy, it said, each of those tracks would earn more \u2014 with payouts previously going to <strong>sub-1,000-stream<\/strong> tracks redirected back into the royalty pool.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Deezer\u2019s artist-centric model, launched in partnership with Universal and Warner, achieved a similar aim \u2013 providing a \u201cdouble boost\u201d in royalties to artists with a minimum of 1,000 streams per month and 500 unique listeners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">In his latest 2026 memo, Sir Lucian Grainge <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sir-lucian-grainge-talks-ai-music-superfans-in-2026-memo-taking-swipe-at-firms-validating-business-models-that-fail-to-respect-artists-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">credited<\/a> UMG\u2019s \u2018artist-centric\u2019 initiatives with accurately predicting \u2013 and stemming \u2013 \u201cthe dramatic increase in the volume of irrelevant uploads, including the rise of AI \u2018slop\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Yet the topic <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/as-spotify-lowers-monetization-threshold-for-podcasters-should-it-increase-payout-barrier-for-music-artists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remains divisive. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Some argue\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">that it\u2019s time for <strong>Spotify\u2019s 1,000-per-year minimum stream payout threshold<\/strong> to be raised <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/as-spotify-lowers-monetization-threshold-for-podcasters-should-it-increase-payout-barrier-for-music-artists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">even higher.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Others \u2013 including <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; TuneCore [325 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/believe\/tunecore\/\">TuneCore<\/a> owner <strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Believe [583 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/believe\/\">Believe<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/believe-applauds-deezers-action-on-noise-but-questions-new-artist-centric-royalty-models-impact-on-rising-artists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contend<\/a> such models represent an unfair system \u201ccentered around taking compensation from rising artists to allocate it to top and established artists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">The new Luminate report, which you can <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/luminatedata.com\/reports\/yearend-music-industry-report-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">download here<\/a>, calculates that there was \u201can average of <strong>106,000<\/strong> new ISRCs [tracks] delivered to streaming services each day in 2025,\u201d up <strong>+7%<\/strong> from the <strong>99,000<\/strong> delivered daily in 2024.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_248730\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">One of the most striking revelations in <strong>Luminate\u2019s new data<\/strong> is the dramatic shift in who\u2019s uploading music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Tracks distributed by major music companies \u2013<strong> Universal Music Group, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Sony Music Entertainment [2,004 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/sony\/sony-music-group\/sony-music-entertainment\/\">Sony Music Entertainment<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Warner Music Group [3,454 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/access-industries\/warner-music-group\/\">Warner Music Group<\/a>,<\/strong> and their affiliated \u2018indie\u2019 distribution arms \u2013 accounted for just <strong>3.8%<\/strong> of ISRC deliveries to DSPs in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">That surprisingly small market share was <strong>less than half the size<\/strong> of the equivalent major market share figure in 2024 (<strong>8%<\/strong>), says Luminate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Conversely, independent and DIY distribution represented a staggering <strong>96.2%<\/strong> of daily uploads last year \u2013 a figure that some in the industry increasingly link to the explosion of AI-generated content and automated upload 1,000+<\/strong> streams threshold in 2025 compared to 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">At higher tiers, <strong>6,800<\/strong> additional tracks reached at least <strong>10 million<\/strong> streams (<strong>65.6K<\/strong> total), and <strong>1,000<\/strong> more tracks hit <strong>50 million+ streams<\/strong> (<strong>5.0K<\/strong> total).<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">However, the number of tracks reaching <strong>1 billion<\/strong> streams actually <em>declined<\/em> slightly to <strong>29<\/strong> in 2025 from <strong>33<\/strong>\u00a0in 2024 \u2013 suggesting that while the middle tier is growing, superstar-level success remains
