Having their name on a film doesn\u2019t guarantee it\u2019ll smash the box office (just look at the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2025\/nov\/10\/sydney-sweeney-addresses-boxing-movie-flop\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">commercial flop<\/a> that was Christy).<\/p>\n<p>Even older movie stars, those who secured the title back in the \u201990s or early 2000s, are struggling to get butts in seats now. Dwayne \u201cThe Rock\u201d Johnson\u2019s The Smashing Machine <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/box-office\/smashing-machine-flops-dwayne-johnson-box-office-1236540588\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">lost millions<\/a> against its budget, while Julia Roberts\u2019 After the Hunt only <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-numbers.com\/movie\/After-the-Hunt-(2025)#tab=summary\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">grossed $10.6 million<\/a> worldwide. For example, many believed Sweeney would be the \u201cnext big thing\u201d after <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/celebrity\/julia-roberts-angelina-jolie-sydney-sweeney-the-making-of-a-new-hollywood-star-20240320-p5fdsk.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Anyone but You<\/a> but her ties to conservative politics and a questionable jeans campaign sent her on a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/celebrity\/sydney-sweeney-was-a-star-on-the-rise-what-happened-20251112-p5ner1.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">far rockier path<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Stars ultimately represent the era of cinema they operate within, Isaacs says. The earliest movie stars \u2013 Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart \u2013 were highly managed, just as the films were. By the \u201970s, stars were given more agency, starring in more experimental, auteur-led films and promoting them in a way that suited their individual goals. Stars of the \u201980s, \u201990s and 2000s were predominantly about box-office clout \u2013 Tom Hanks became one of the highest-paid actors of the 1990s and early 2000s off the likes of Forrest Gump and Saving Private Ryan, while Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger were the selling point for big blockbuster action movies such as the Rambo and Terminator series of films, among many others.<\/p>\n<p>But today, the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/movies\/cinema-was-meant-to-reset-in-2025-did-it-live-up-to-the-promise-20260104-p5nrjp.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">state of cinema is less certain<\/a>, making it less clear what modern-day stars represent.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s within this confusion that existing IP and franchise fare have flourished. You can take out the movie star and the director \u2013 all you need is the IP.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-80607c67-0 gdRzoe\">\n<p>Just look at the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2026\/jan\/13\/zoe-saldana-highest-grossing-actor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">highest-grossing actor<\/a> of all time, Zoe Salda\u00f1a. Though certainly recognisable, Salda\u00f1a\u2019s name arguably isn\u2019t what pulls people to the cinema, rather it\u2019s the franchise hits in which she features (Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy). He must become part of the Marty Supreme and A24 brand.<\/span><span class=\"sc-4820f69c-3 jkEJCb\">AP<\/span><\/p>\n<p>David Marshall, emeritus professor in the faculty of arts at Deakin University in Victoria, says these changes reflect a broader shift in human connection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have this fear that our cultures are beginning to break down to a degree that we might not even have the same notion of how we connect,\u201d he says. \u201cFor the last 100 years, media and movies were where the great connections were. Whereas now, many people are connected to something or someone but they aren\u2019t anywhere near where the other person lives, and they\u2019re connected to so many other things at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-80607c67-0 gdRzoe\">\n<p>AI further complicates this, Marshall says, as it becomes less obvious which parts of a film are AI-generated.
