Its opening track and new single \u201cDance\u2026\u201d kinda sounds like if late \u201990s Madonna was produced by Justice. John Darnielle writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nI\u2019ve been writing songs whose titles start with \u201cGoing to\u2026\u201d for thirty years or so \u2013 it\u2019s an informal series within our catalog, though I don\u2019t do so many of them any more. Last year I was listening to multiple versions of the Dead\u2019s \u201cPeggy-O\u201d (try the version from Cameron Indoor Stadium, Durham, NC, 4\/12\/78) and thinking about Fennario, also the land of \u201cDire Wolf,\u201d and I thought I\u2019d write a traditional style tune myself. I thought about how lucid and unsentimental traditional songs are about death and change \u2013 how folk songs present life as it is and let the feeling flow from there \u2013 and I wrote \u201cGoing to Fennario.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I listen to the Grateful Dead all the time; their endless musical curiosity is a north star for anybody who seeks a life in music, plus anybody who tours in a rock band walks down paths cleared by the Dead. Their work means so much to me. We weren\u2019t going to release any new music until later this year, but in honor of Bob Weir, who\u2019s crossed over to the next life and leaves behind a musical legacy that will be treasured for as long as people listen to music, I wanted to put this out now, so here\u2019s an early look at what we got up to last fall between tours. It\u2019s got Mikaela Davis on harp, Rob Jost on bass, George Douglas on the hammered dulcimer \u2014 his son plays in the Mountain Goats \u2014 and then the usual suspects \u2013 me, Matt Douglas, and Jon Wurster \u2013 holding down the rest. You can pay what you like, believe it if you need it, or leave it if you dare; 100% of the proceeds on this single will go to the American Cancer Society.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks, Bob Weir, for all those \u201cJack Straw\u201ds that\u2019re always right there when I need \u2019em. Nettwerk connected me with Aisha Badru, who wrote and recorded her vocals remotely. She brought a deeply internal, unguarded emotional weight to the track\u2014capturing the anxiety of that time, the sense of movement driven by restlessness rather than freedom, and the feeling of trying to outrun something that keeps circling back. Even though we weren\u2019t in the same room, her voice sits at the heart of the song, carrying both tension and vulnerability. James McAlister also contributed percussion remotely, giving the track a subtle human pulse beneath the haze. The lyrics is a reminder from me to me that it\u2019s important to breathe out. I often have the feeling that I only know how to breathe in and not out. Like the air gets stuck inside of me. I think that there is always beauty in front of you if you are open to see it. After hearing him sing on the radio, I spent weeks tracking him down and begging him to work with me. And, lucky me, he agreed.
