I consider myself a Renaissance man, so it starts with music.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">His fourth album, \u201cDon\u2019t Be Dumb,\u201d released Friday, is a return to some of Rocky\u2019s familiar musical influences, with gothic takes on Southern rap styles (\u201cPlaya,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=g1-46Nu3HxQ\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cHelicopter\u201d<\/a>) and experimental production that dabbles in cloudy abstraction and psychedelic rock (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lCp0BmcFPQ8\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cPunk Rocky\u201d<\/a>). Typical of the rapper\u2019s preferred eclecticism, the album features appearances by rappers like Doechii and Tyler, the Creator, alongside vocals from the folk singer <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/30\/arts\/music\/jessica-pratt-here-in-the-pitch.html\" title=\"\">Jessica Pratt<\/a> and Damon Albarn.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cI think this album is what 2011 Rocky would be making in 2026,\u201d he said. (He has also maintained a sense of humor about the long wait: In advance of the album, he released merchandise emblazoned with the phrase \u201cAlbum Never Dropping.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">In a wide-ranging conversation, Rocky, 37, discussed how he\u2019s grappled with the effects of his legal entanglements \u2014 the alleged shooting of a former close friend, for which <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/18\/arts\/music\/asap-rocky-not-guilty-assault-trial.html\" title=\"\">he was acquitted in Los Angeles<\/a> last year, and an <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/08\/14\/arts\/music\/asap-rocky-sweden-guilty.html\" title=\"\">assault conviction for a street fight<\/a> in Sweden in 2019, for which he served no additional jail time. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">JOE COSCARELLI<\/strong> Here we are, nearly eight years from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/05\/25\/arts\/music\/asap-rocky-sothebys-testing.html\" title=\"\">\u201cTesting,\u201d<\/a> and you start off the new one right off the bat: \u201cIt\u2019s been a little while since I\u2019ve been in the league \/ a couple lil trials, a couple lil leaks.\u201d Not to mention three kids, the movies. Which of those things is most responsible for you not releasing music?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">ASAP ROCKY<\/strong> All of the above. I just didn\u2019t want to really use the kids as a scapegoat. [Laughs]<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">I just always said to myself, like, I ain\u2019t going to rush it, man. I thought I was ready in 2024. I thought the court case was going to be done, that kept getting pushed back. And it was just kind of hard to really focus, you know what I mean? Not only that, me being a parent played a big part. I want to be there. I want to be present. I want to be supportive. And all of these different instances is what gave me new material to talk about.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">COSCARELLI<\/strong> There\u2019s a lot of family stuff on this album, but also a lot of anger about your trial last year, including a song called \u201cStop Snitching.\u201d That followed the case in Sweden. Were you thinking, \u201cHow did I get myself back into another of these situations?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">ROCKY <\/strong>Absolutely. Every time you\u2019re in a situation like that, it\u2019s \u201cnever again.\u201d And when it happens again, you\u2019re like, What the [expletive], here we are again. But there\u2019s a lesson to be learned, even if you\u2019re not in the wrong necessarily. God just has a funny way, in my opinion, of humbling you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">COSCARELLI<\/strong> I\u2019m curious about the push and pull between \u201cI can\u2019t believe this is happening to me\u201d and \u201cwhat is my role in what is happening?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">ROCKY <\/strong>I think a lot of rappers have a hard battle with survivor\u2019s guilt, survivor\u2019s remorse. For a long time, I was that guy, and I wanted everybody happy, I wanted everybody successful. It\u2019s really predominantly in hip-hop culture where you\u2019re supposed to live by this certain code, you\u2019re supposed to do these certain things for your boys.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">That didn\u2019t change who I am as a man \u2014 if you\u2019re a loved one of mine, a friend, relative, I\u2019mma still look out for you any way I can. But I felt more compelled to take on everybody\u2019s issues and I kept being supportive of just nonsense, no good people. I think this was God\u2019s way of showing me, you\u2019ve got to cut it off. And when I cut it off, this was their way of pulling me back in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">JON CARAMANICA<\/strong> As you\u2019re feeling pulled back on this one path, you also have a whole new path that\u2019s presenting itself \u2014 your three children. I wonder if you were not a family man now, would it have been much harder to cut off all the others?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">ASAP ROCKY<\/strong> Absolutely, bro. A woman will change your whole life, especially if it\u2019s a companion. Being with my girl took a blindfold off. As soon as you get with a girl, she\u2019ll tell you like, \u201cThat\u2019s not your friend. <em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">That\u2019s<\/em> your friend. But that one \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">COSCARELLI<\/strong> And to be clear, you didn\u2019t just get with any girl.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">ASAP ROCKY <\/strong>I know \u2014 I got with a very special woman, you know what I mean? I\u2019m thankful that she was put in my life at that time, because I think any time prior to that, I don\u2019t think I was ready for something like that. I don\u2019t think she was either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">CARAMANICA <\/strong>I wonder how finding a partner like that, being in love, changed you. Because if you would\u2019ve asked me in 2012, is this guy going to be the most happily coupled-up man in rap music, I respectfully would have said probably not.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">ASAP ROCKY <\/strong>Hell no. We was having fun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">CARAMANICA<\/strong> But you\u2019ve hard-swerved and I wonder what it took to get you to that place?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">ASAP ROCKY <\/strong>I always wanted to be a parent. Everybody knows you\u2019ve got to be really selective and careful about who you procreate with. Meeting somebody that was like, morally inclined, it really felt like we were parallel as far as things we can agree on. We were on the same page, born the same year, my dad is from her country \u2014 you know, being in the same industry, doing the same thing. It\u2019s so many similarities it\u2019s just funny \u2014 we laugh about it a lot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">She was always my boo. I always had love for her. And when we were just friends, my mother used to say, like, \u201cI know you like this girl that you with right now\u201d \u2014 I ain\u2019t going to say no names \u2014 \u201cbut I want you with Riri!\u201d \u201cThat girl don\u2019t even want me like that. We cool, Ma, that\u2019s just my friend, chill!\u201d \u201cBut I\u2019m telling you, she real!\u201d And mothers know best.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">CARAMANICA <\/strong>One thing I\u2019ve thought a lot about watching your life with Rihanna over the last few years is that your friend and mentor Yams is not present to watch this part of your life. For that time in between, was there an absence you felt that finding a partner healed?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-10\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">ASAP ROCKY <\/strong>There\u2019s still<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> <\/strong>that empty void, even to this day. Yams and her was like this, though [crossing fingers]. She loved Yams! She took us on the Diamonds tour and Yams used to come out lit. I mean, everybody loved Yams. He was a lovable guy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">CARAMANICA <\/strong>I know how seriously you took his musical judgment. In those intervening years where you didn\u2019t put records out, did you not know who to turn to say, \u201cIs this the right thing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">ASAP ROCKY<\/strong> I don\u2019t, so I just do me. But I have really good taste, especially when it comes to d\u00e9cor, fashion, lifestyle, music, film, everything. I\u2019m so confident in it. It\u2019s just like, I make certain music, it\u2019s an acquired taste. You can\u2019t compare Chanel to Fashion Nova.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">COSCARELLI<\/strong> So you don\u2019t feel like you\u2019re chasing hits, you\u2019re chasing bespoke sounds that feel true to you. Because you\u2019re a famous guy, but you don\u2019t really have Top 40 hits.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-11\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">ASAP ROCKY <\/strong>I don\u2019t gotta do that. I did that right out the gate. We know the formula \u2014 everybody knows the formula: \u201cYo, get this artist, get that artist, get this producer, call it a day.\u201d It\u2019s easy. You can tell when people are looking for hits by the choice of collaboration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Personally, I never exploited my music for my celebrity advantages. I don\u2019t have to \u2014 I\u2019m that guy, I\u2019m Him Burton. I don\u2019t gotta do none of that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">COSCARELLI <\/strong>So you consider your music and your celebrity separate, and your celebrity allows you to not compromise in your music?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">ASAP ROCKY <\/strong>Absolutely. I\u2019d just rather be a creative genius. Miss me with the politics, man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">CARAMANICA <\/strong>Something fundamentally changed in rap fashion in 2013, 2014, after ASAP and Odd Future. Watching the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ob3ktDxAjWI\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cPeso\u201d<\/a> or \u201cPurple Swag\u201d videos, it\u2019s just how everyone dresses now. I wonder how you think about influence outside of a purely musical sense.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-12\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">ASAP ROCKY <\/strong>It\u2019s flattering because, like you said, before me, it was Kanye and it was Pharrell. Before him it was Kool Keith, it was Grand Puba, you know, fly guys. I think that we\u2019re supposed to inspire. I\u2019m glad that I get to be the guy that people reference or go to or see some type of inspiration in, because I feel that way about me, too, you know what I\u2019m saying?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-13\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">COSCARELLI<\/strong> That said, you\u2019re being very magnanimous about it now, but you also have a song on this record called \u201cStole Ya Flow\u201d where you\u2019re not taking so kindly to people biting your style. Obviously the internet is going to decide who you\u2019re talking about \u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">ASAP ROCKY <\/strong>I think we all know.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">COSCARELLI<\/strong> They\u2019re going to say it\u2019s Drake. He was with you in those early days, brought you on tour. Where did things go wrong in that relationship?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">ASAP ROCKY <\/strong>I don\u2019t know, I just started just seeing people who started out as friends become foes. Seemed like they was unhappy for you and started sending shots. I think that\u2019s what led to any of our misunderstandings or whatever the case is. It really ain\u2019t smoke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">CARAMANICA <\/strong>Does it feel resolvable to you?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">ASAP ROCKY <\/strong>Nah, it don\u2019t even need to be. For what?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">COSCARELLI <\/strong>An album like \u201cTesting\u201d was an experimental swerve for you and even this album might not be an immediate crowd-pleaser. These are albums listeners like to argue over. Do you think you\u2019re appreciated as the creative genius you say you are?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">ASAP ROCKY <\/strong>I think that I don\u2019t give a [expletive]. I think I am. I <em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">know<\/em> I am. Without trying to sound delusional or too self-centered, yes, absolutely.
