Queen Sofia of Spain was supported by two of her granddaughters,
\nPrincess Leonor and Infanta Sofia, as funeral ceremonies began for
\nPrincess Irene of Greece.<\/p>\n

Irene, Sofia\u2019s younger sister, died on January 15 at the age of
\n83 at her home at the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid.<\/p>\n

The first of her funeral ceremonies was held at the Orthodox
\nCathedral of St Andrew and St Demetrius in Madrid on January 17
\nwith her Spanish relations in full attendance.<\/p>\n

Queen Sofia, 87, was accompanied into the cathedral by Leonor,
\n20, and Sofia, 18, while King Felipe and Queen Letizia led mourners
\nin.<\/p>\n

The coffin of Princess Irene, covered in a flag bearing the
\ncrest of the Greek royal family, was later carried into the church.
\nIrene was born a Princess of Greece and Denmark and was, briefly,
\nheir to the Greek throne when her older brother, Constantine,
\nbecame King of the Hellenes in 1963.<\/p>\n

Some of Irene\u2019s Greek royal relatives joined this first memorial
\nceremony and many more will be at her funeral in Athens which will
\nbe followed by burial at the royal cemetery at Tatoi.<\/p>\n

Alexia, the daughter of King Constantine who replaced Irene as
\nheir to the throne, was there along with her children. Alexia
\nwalked in with her cousin, Infanta Cristina, younger daughter of
\nQueen Sofia.<\/p>\n

Cristina\u2019s sister, Infanta Elena, also attended along with her
\ndaughter, Victoria de Marichalar. Her son, Froilan, wasn\u2019t there \u2013
\nhe now lives in Abu Dhabi which is also home to his grandfather,
\nKing Juan Carlos, who didn\u2019t make the trip to Madrid for Irene\u2019s
\nfuneral ceremony. El Pais reported that doctors had decided that
\nthe long trip, at such short notice, wasn\u2019t good for his
\nhealth.<\/p>\n

However, his sister, Infanta Margarita, was at the service.<\/p>\n

Infanta Cristina named her only daughter after Princess Irene
\nand Irene Urdangarin attended the service along with two of her
\nbrothers, Juan and Miguel.<\/p>\n

Queen Sofia was supported throughout the service by Princess
\nLeonor and Infanta Sofia and walked out on the arm of her son, King
\nFelipe VI. The chapel was open to the public in the hours that
\nfollowed so that others could pay their own last respects to
\nPrincess Irene.<\/p>\n

Irene\u2019s funeral in Athens takes place on January 18 2026 with
\nKing Felipe, Queen Letizia and their two daughters travelling to
\nGreece with Queen Sofia. Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece and Crown
\nPrincess Marie Chantal will join them along with other members of
\nthe Greek royal family for a final farewell.<\/p>\n
