A massive 55 million Americans (about 20% of the country) watched in 1998 when \u201cTitanic\u201d won best picture.<\/p>\n<p>Last year in the US, a comparably wimpy 20.2 million tuned in to learn what \u201cAnora\u201d is.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, that was enough to make the event the 17th highest-rated telecast of 2025 \u2014 on par with most Sunday Night Football games.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And even considering the almost-century-old ceremony\u2019s diminished stature, the Academy Awards still inspire passion all over the globe, both angry and euphoric.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last March, when Brazil\u2019s \u201cI\u2019m Still Here\u201d won best international feature film, revelers in Rio de Janeiro reportedly danced in the streets.<\/p>\n<p>And after Netflix\u2019s excruciating \u201cEmilia Perez\u201d scored a leading 13 nods, and viewers at home bravely pressed play, the bizarre French Spanish-language musical became one of social media\u2019s biggest punchlines.<\/p>\n<p>The Oscars, for many, still matter.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cSinners,\u201d starring Michael B. Jordan, could land a record nomination tally. <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Warner Bros\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Voting for the 98th Academy Award nominations closed on Thursday night, and the contenders will be announced Jan. 22.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s going to infuriate the masses or send \u2018em Samba-ing?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The big kahuna this time is \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/17\/entertainment\/one-battle-after-another-review-leonardo-dicaprio-stars-in-a-huge-violent-hilarious-blockbuster\/\">One Battle After Another<\/a>,\u201d starring Leonardo DiCaprio.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yes, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/04\/18\/entertainment\/sinners-review-michael-b-jordan-plays-twins-in-an-intoxicating-southern-vampire-flick\/\">Sinners<\/a>,\u201d the Southern vampire flick with Michael B. Jordan, could wind up with the most mentions because, beyond being an admired success, it has songs and effects.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a no-brainer best picture nominee.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t be misled by its high tally, even a potentially record-breaking one. \u201cEmilia Perez\u201d got 13 in 2025 and won a measly two.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cHamnet\u201d is adored in the industry, and Jessie Buckley is likely to win Best Actress. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOne Battle,\u201d directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, has been steamrolling through award season even though it flopped, and there is no indication that its tour de triumph will end.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Anderson \u2014 the 55-year-old director of \u201cBoogie Nights, \u201cMagnolia\u201d and \u201cThere Will Be Blood\u201d \u2014 has never nabbed best picture or director before, and there\u2019s a widely felt sense that his time has come.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The smart money is that it will.<\/p>\n<p>DiCaprio and co-stars Teyana Taylor, Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro will all probably be listed off Thursday, and so could newcomer Chase Infiniti in best actress.<\/p>\n<p>Does \u201cOne Battle\u201d have any competition in best picture at all?<\/p>\n<p>Sorta. The same night Anderson\u2019s action-packed satire won the comedy Golden Globe, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/09\/entertainment\/hamnet-with-paul-mescal-is-one-of-the-best-most-gut-punching-movies-of-the-year\/\">Hamnet<\/a>\u201d (a better movie, actually), seized the drama prize.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Rose Byrne has been scooping up accolades, but is her movie too weird for the Oscars? <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The tragedy about Shakespeare\u2019s wife, with its half-timbered houses and \u201cto be or not to be\u201ds, is also poised to perform well at the BAFTAs, the British Oscars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But I\u2019d be surprised if the intimate, intense story pulled a \u201cShakespeare in Love\u201d shocker, despite industry adoration.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chances are the gold it gets on Oscars night goes to its incandescent star Jessie Buckley for best actress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, yeah, Rose Byrne has been scooping up accolades for \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/01\/25\/entertainment\/rose-byrne-is-terrifying-in-if-i-had-legs-id-kick-you-at-sundance\/\">If I Had Legs I\u2019d Kick You<\/a>.\u201d She\u2019ll get nominated, but that indie is too weird for the Oscars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We all saw last year what weirdness got Demi Moore \u2014 jack squat.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet is leading the race for best actor. <span class=\"credit\">WireImage<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The race everybody\u2019s talking about is best actor \u2014 and specifically Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet vs. DiCaprio.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chalamet, the 30-year-old star of \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/01\/entertainment\/marty-supreme-review-timothee-chalamet-wins-in-the-best-movie-of-the-year\/\">Marty Supreme<\/a>,\u201d seems unbeatable to me.<\/p>\n<p>Despite love for DiCaprio and his strong work in \u201cOne Battle,\u201d it is exceedingly rare for an actor to win for a performance that the movie doesn\u2019t hinge on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, the past six years the victor has played the title character in their film. (Yes, I\u2019m counting \u201cThe Whale\u201d). DiCaprio is one part of an ensemble, the members of which outshine him.<\/p>\n<p>Chalamet\u2019s \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d on the other hand, would simply not exist without him.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s in nearly every second of it, and is absolutely extraordinary.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Ethan Hawke should be a best actor contender for \u201cBlue Moon.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Sony Pictures\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So is Ethan Hawke in \u201cBlue Moon\u201d as Lorenz Hart. But a friend who watched it with a West Coast crowd at Telluride said the flick went over everybody\u2019s tanned heads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If Los Angelenos don\u2019t care about a Broadway lyricist they\u2019ve heard of, why would the 20% of Oscar voters who live abroad?<\/p>\n<p>Back to best picture, where \u201cOne Battle,\u201d \u201cSinners\u201d and \u201cHamnet\u201d will be joined by \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d Norway\u2019s \u201cSentimental Value\u201d and \u201cFrankenstein.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The other five slots are up in the air, but likely wind up a mix of foreign films (say, Brazil\u2019s \u201cThe Secret Agent\u201d or Spain\u2019s \u201cSirat\u201d) and blockbusters like \u201cF1\u201d or \u201cWicked: For Good.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Netflix\u2019s overrated sleep aid \u201cTrain Dreams\u201d has a good shot.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Amy Madigan in \u201cWeapons.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If the Academy is smart, they\u2019d recognize \u201cWeapons,\u201d which was one of the most buzzed about original movies of the year and a major box office success.<\/p>\n<p>Could it make the cut? I hope so. The Oscars need some shakeups.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Golden Globes were so predictable, all night I longed for a more fun activity, such as washing the dishes or filing my taxes.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy Awards air Sunday, March 15. And if you\u2019re in the \u201cWho the hell cares?!\u201d camp, don\u2019t worry.
