For the most part, every attempt by Netflix<\/a> to knock off the \u201cReal Housewives\u201d franchise has failed fairly miserably through the years. However, the streamer may have finally found its footing with its latest facsimile, \u201cMembers Only: Palm Beach<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The series, which premiered in late December, follows cast members Hilary Musser, Rosalyn Yellin, Maria Cozamanis, Ro-Mina Ustayev and Taja Abitbol as they navigate the social circles of Palm Beach, Florida, and its \u201cunspoken rules, inherited traditions and high-stakes hierarchies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n I disagree with the critique that the new reality series is the \u201cTemu version of a \u2018Housewives\u2019 show<\/a>,\u201d as one user said on IMDb. It\u2019s more like a Zara rip-off of some designer\u2019s recently lauded collection \u2014 and I mean that as a compliment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n On \u201cMembers Only: Palm Beach,\u201d there is clearer evidence of wealth as opposed to some of the more dubious sources of income displayed on Bravo\u2019s hit franchise. (Some of our favorite housewives have faced felony charges<\/a> and convictions<\/a> because of financial issues.) Likewise, this cast genuinely lives in the area<\/a> they claim to represent on TV, so when one of them declares \u201cit smells like money\u201d in the opening moments of the premiere, there is no need to suspend belief. Together, that makes the show live up more to the \u201cReal Housewives\u201d premise than some of the franchise\u2019s shows. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n That doesn\u2019t make \u201cMembers Only: Palm Beach\u201d as entertaining as \u201cThe Real Housewives of Salt Lake City\u201d by any stretch. But credibly wealthy women within a social circle not solely determined by their employment makes for its own kind of compelling television.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n One obstacle for select viewers, however, could be whether they can stomach the level of admiration conveyed for President Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The show is not overtly political by any means, yet there are a lot<\/em> of references to Mar-a-Lago. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cOh, wow. You can see Mar-a-Lago from here.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cHave you ever been invited to Mar-a-Lago?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cI bid against Donald for Mar-a-Lago.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cYou were loud in the bathroom at Mar-a-Lago.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cOne weekend we\u2019re at Mar-a-Lago, the next we\u2019re at a fetish party.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cGale was vaping in the living room at Mar-a-Lago in Trump\u2019s face.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n If I played a drinking game based on the number of times Mar-a-Lago was mentioned, I likely would have died of alcohol poisoning within the hour. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n Other exclusive country clubs are mentioned \u2014 the Michael Jordan-owned 1000 North and The Breakers \u2014 but the Trump-owned Mar-a-Lago<\/a> is undoubtedly considered the place to be.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n I don\u2019t love hearing the constant references to Trump, but I know too much about white voters<\/a> to pretend this is the only show that could be branded \u201cThe Real Housewives of MAGA.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n If anything, that makes these women more like \u201cReal Housewives\u201d than any previously presented duplications, considering I could easily see plenty of women from this cast mingling with other Trump-loving Bravolebrities<\/a> we know of \u2014 particularly those now living in the Palm Beach area and partying at Mar-a-Lago, too<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n They\u2019re not masking their conservative leanings, but it is fascinating to watch them each take themselves so seriously and argue over social statuses and rules.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Take Ro-Mina, someone who describes herself as \u201cThe Palm Beach Kim Kardashian<\/a>.\u201d She finds herself clamoring for access to Mar-a-Lago and the likes of Trump and Elon Musk, so she subjects herself to relentless critiques from Rosalyn, her new mentor, over how she dresses, how she\u2019s too loud, and how she essentially needs to conform for the clout she seeks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Aside from having black hair, she doesn\u2019t resemble Kardashian at all, but I suppose they at least share the experience of being classified as new money trying to make waves among the elite. What separates her from Kim K., though, is that Kim is willing to do whatever to achieve her goal. Ro-Mina is not, for the most part, and while I don\u2019t know how to translate the adage \u201cthe game is the game\u201d to her in Palm Beach terms, someone else ought to.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Then there is Gale Brophy, a friend of the show, who, like many elders, loves to tell the same stories over and over again \u2014 in her case, her claim to fame is being the original \u201cIT\u201d girl of Palm Beach society. Gale fancies herself as the Grand Dame of Palm Beach and has anointed Rosalyn as her successor \u2014 complete with her passing a literal baton and an eventual exchange of tiaras. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n Meanwhile, Hilary, who reminds me of \u201cReal Housewives of New York City\u201d OG Jill Zarin, along with Taja, finds Gale to be a name-dropping fool and a phony who got kicked out of Mar-a-Lago for being broke.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n What\u2019s also illuminating is what\u2019s largely unspoken: the faces of the cast members resemble what\u2019s now been <\/span>deemed<\/span><\/a> \u201cthe Mar-a-Lago face<\/a>.<\/span>\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Beneath all the boasts of luxury and access on this series is an obsession with relevance and acceptance, just like on any iteration of \u201cReal Housewives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n The \u201cReal Housewives\u201d franchise has long highlighted that money can\u2019t buy you class or a clue, but \u201cMembers Only: Palm Beach\u201d adds another layer: It can\u2019t buy you freedom from the same desperation for acceptance that drives everyone else. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n If there ever could be a \u201cReal Housewives of Palm Beach,\u201d it would look and sound a lot like this.
