Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are tackling cancel culture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
During a recent interview on The Joe Rogan Experience<\/a><\/i>, the movie-making duo discussed their latest film together, The Rip<\/i>, and spoke candidly about how cancel culture takes things to an extreme level.<\/p>\n \u201cI bet some of those people would have preferred to go to jail for 18 months or whatever and then come out and say, \u2018No, but I paid my debt. Like, we\u2019re done. Like, can we be done?\u2019\u201d Damon said about those who have been cancelled, as reported by Fox News<\/a>. <\/p>\n \u201cLike, the thing about getting kind of excoriated publicly like that, it just never ends.\u201d<\/p>\n Damon added that once someone has been publicly called out for something, the public won\u2019t let them forget it, and the mistake \u201cwill follow you to the grave.\u201d<\/p>\n Affleck agreed with Damon, adding that people \u201chave dark, f***ed up instincts to isolate people\u201d, and even \u201cget joy out of\u201d seeing someone else get in trouble, theorising it brings them joy because they aren\u2019t the ones in trouble.<\/p>\n \u201cMaybe because part of us is saying \u2018it\u2019s not me,\u2019 so if you can point the finger, everyone\u2019s looking over there. We feel safer, you know?\u201d Affleck said.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd to take any forgiveness out of it is a really f***ed up thing, because then it makes it impossible to actually go, \u2018All right, yeah, I did that \u2026 That was wrong. I get it,\u2019 You know, because it doesn\u2019t matter. Once you\u2019ve said you\u2019ve done it, you become like an outcast.\u201d<\/p>\n He added that he doesn\u2019t believe \u201canybody wants to think\u201d that \u201cthe sum total of who you are is your worst moment\u201d.<\/p>\n The two Academy Award winners appeared on the podcast to promote their latest film<\/a>, The Rip<\/i>, which premiered on Netflix on Friday. <\/p>\n Loosely based on a true story, the crime thriller tells the story of a group of Miami police officers who find millions of dollars, leading to the officers questioning who they can trust.<\/p>\n Affleck and Damon\u2019s working relationship goes back to their childhood, as they grew up doing local theatre and auditioning together in Massachusetts. They achieved mainstream success when they wrote and starred in the 1997 movie, Good Will Hunting<\/i>, winning the Academy Award for best screenplay together in 1998.<\/p>\n Prior to collaborating on the 2021 movie, The Last Duel<\/i>, the duo took a long break from working together, having previously collaborated on six other films, including Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back<\/i> in 2001.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, we had gone, I think it was probably almost 20 years working together, and I think partly because when Good Will Hunting came out, all that time ago, we were so seen as a team, that I think we wanted to not kind get typecast,\u201d Damon said of their break from working together during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show<\/a><\/i> in January.<\/p>\n \u201cBut yeah, I was watching that Peter Jackson documentary and at the end of it, on the fourth one at the end, The Beatles play that live show on top of the roof and it was so great, and I was watching it with my daughter, and he put up this chyron that said \u2018This is the last time The Beatles played live together\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n Damon went on to say that the moment made him emotional, thinking about how much more The Beatles could have done together, adding it was \u201cthe kind of emotional impetus\u201d for him to turn to Affleck and say \u201clet\u2019s do this\u201d and \u201cgo out on our shields at least together\u201d.<\/p>\n
