At one point in their discussion, Damon suggested that for some public figures, the perpetual ostracization and scrutiny of being canceled is worse than a jail sentence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bet some of those people would have preferred to go to jail for 18 months or whatever and then come out and say, \u2018No, but I paid my debt. Like, we\u2019re done. Like, can we be done?\u2019\u201d Damon said. \u201cLike, the thing about getting kind of excoriated publicly like that, it just never ends. And it\u2019s the first thing that\u2026 you know, it just will follow you to the grave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the podcast episode was released Jan. 16, Knox, 38, who previously slammed Damon for starring in a 2021 movie inspired by her real-life wrongful conviction and imprisonment, called the Oscar winner out again on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother thing Matt Damon could have run by me before putting out into the world,\u201d she wrote on X, formerly Twitter, alongside a Variety article about Damon\u2019s cancel culture comments.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Amanda Knox called out Matt Damon for comments he recently made comparing enduring cancel culture to serving jail time. <span class=\"credit\">Amanda Knox \/ Instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Knox spent four years in prison after she and her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were twice\u00a0convicted and later acquitted\u00a0in the 2007 murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher, in Perugia, Italy. The two were released from prison in October 2011.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After Knox shared her post, she replied to several X users who commented in the thread.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, well, literally going to jail\u2026not so good,\u201d wrote journalist Katherine Brodsky. \u201cBut frankly, given that some of these \u2018cancelled\u2019 people have taken their own lives, yeah, maybe they would have preferred to go to jail for 18 months and be done with it \u2014 instead, there\u2019s no end to it. No coming back. It comes with its own stigma and lasting trauma. You don\u2019t just get to \u2018be done with it,\u2019 personally or socially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fox News Digital has reached out to Damon\u2019s representative for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After being released from prison, Knox returned to the United States and became an outspoken advocate for\u00a0criminal justice reform\u00a0with a focus on the wrongfully convicted and media ethics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She has penned two memoirs about her experiences, including 2013\u2019s \u201cWaiting to Be Heard\u201d and 2025\u2019s \u201cFree: My Search for Meaning\u201d and also hosts the \u201cHard Knox\u201d podcast.<\/p>\n<p>After Damon\u2019s movie \u201cStillwater\u201d was released in July 2021, Knox denounced the film in a viral thread on X. \u201cStillwater,\u201d which was directed by Tom McCarthy, stars Damon as a father whose daughter was convicted of killing her roommate and imprisoned in France. The movie follows Damon\u2019s character as he travels from\u00a0Oklahoma to France\u00a0where he sets out on a quest to prove his daughter\u2019s innocence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Knox spent four years in prison after being wrongfully convicted in the murder of her roommate in Italy.  <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>McCarthy previously confirmed that the movie was inspired by Knox\u2019s real-life case. Knox slammed the filmmakers for further linking her name to Kercher\u2019s murder after she was exonerated and also took issue with the twist in the movie\u2019s storyline, which deviated from actual events and cast doubt on the innocence of the character based on her.<\/p>\n<p>During an August 2021 interview with\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/film\/news\/amanda-knox-stillwater-interview-filmmakers-responsibility-1235034872\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Variety<\/a>, Knox explained why she felt it was necessary to go after Damon and McCarthy over their handling of her story in \u201cStillwater.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWrongful convictions don\u2019t just happen to the individual. They happen to a whole network of human beings who love this person and know that they\u2019re innocent and fight for their innocence,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>Knox went on to note that the movie\u2019s decision to make the character she inspired somewhat culpable in the murder meant that the lines between reality and fiction weren\u2019t blurred in a responsible way, making it hard for her not to feel like Damon and McCarthy were opening wounds she\u2019s worked hard to put behind her.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Knox previously slammed Damon for starring in 2021\u2019s \u201cStillwater.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">MediaPunch \/ BACKGRID<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think that the filmmakers can honestly say that they went far enough away from my case so that it wouldn\u2019t be recognizably my case,\u201d she told the outlet. \u201cAnd I think that that\u2019s clear in all of the coverage where everyone\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, this is recognizably the Amanda Knox case.\u2019 And from that audiences can then draw conclusions about me, whether or not those conclusions are accurate or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cThe question that Tom McCarthy really has to ask himself is, is it responsible to keep recycling that same story when we know what the consequences of that can be?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shared her view that the movie renewed the public perception that she had something to do with the crime.
