ATLANTA \u2014 What do you get when combine Beats, blades and brightness? You get Kevin Randolph.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n \u201cThey call me \u2014 I\u2019m a fixture\u00a0\u2014 Mr. Beltline,\u201d Randolph told Spectrum News\u2019 Bree Driscoll. \u201cThey say if they don’t see Kevin on the Beltline, you haven\u2019t experienced the Beltline.\u201d<\/p>\n Both the Atlanta Beltline and Kevin are quite the experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n Almost every day, Randolph straps up his Rollerblades, turns up his Beats headphones and heads out onto the 22-mile loop of historic railroad corridors known as the Beltline.<\/p>\n He skates and sings for hours, greeting friends and strangers along his way.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ll be doing \u2018Milkshake\u2019 together with Apple Bottom jeans,\u201d Randolph said. \u201cSo they expect to be dancing with me and singing with me.\u201d<\/p>\n But Randolph wasn’t always the outgoing dynamo you see today.<\/p>\n Growing up the youngest of five children in Chicago, he gave off a much different vibe.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI was extremely small, extremely shy, very nerdy. I was like Urkel,\u201d he said, referring to the character from the TV sitcom \u201cFamily Matters.\u201d \u201cEverything but the glasses with the tape on the them.\u201d<\/p>\n At 18, Randolph\u00a0 joined the Navy, working on submarines.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI was on the ones with the missiles,\u201d he said. \u201cSo we were under water for 110 days, intentionally.\u201d<\/p>\n Randolph is a bit of a jack-of-all-trades. While in the military, he received a bachelor’s degree in computer science, and later a master’s in math education. He sold houses and taught advanced electronics. All along, there have been hints that he’s an entertainer at heart.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI did ballet in college,\u201d he said. \u201c \u2026 I was a tall gymnast. I did gymnastics for about 10 years. I sang in choirs and solos.\u201d<\/p>\n Randolph had been going out to the Beltline to skate for years. But in 2020, his daily routine shifted from just being about exercise to becoming a movement of positivity.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cAfter corona(virus), I started singing and waving at people to bring them out of their comatose state,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n At first, many people were wary.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re kind of holding back and just kind of do a double take,\u201d he recounted.\u00a0<\/p>\n Fast-forward to today, when Kevin can hardly get 10 steps in without an interaction. He’s become a local icon and a favorite on social media, with thousands of followers, millions of likes, and even a sponsorship from a local restaurant chain.<\/p>\n \u201cI expected a little check for like a thousand dollars, and it was bigger than that, guys,\u201d Randolph said. \u201cI won’t say what, but it was bigger than that.\u201d<\/p>\n Also big: his dreams of spreading positivity.<\/p>\n \u201cIt’s not going to kill you to say hello to someone,\u201d Randolph said. \u201cIt’s just not. You don’t have to like them.<\/p>\n \u201cSee the smile in her face.
