After seven years away,\u00a0The Claypool Lennon Delirium<\/strong> has returned with its first new release, \u201cWAP\u201d. The standalone single marks the duo of Primus\u2019 Les Claypool<\/strong> and John Lennon and Yoko Ono\u2019s son Sean Ono Lennon<\/strong>\u2018s first new music since 2019\u2019s South of Reality<\/em>.<\/p>\n The song is not a Cardi B cover but instead stands for the song\u2019s chorus, \u201cWhat a predicament.\u201d Like recent Claypool releases Conspiranoid<\/em> (Primus, 2022) and his collaborative single \u201cZelensky: The Man With The Iron Balls\u201d with Gogol Bordello\u2019s\u00a0Eugene H\u00fctz<\/strong>,\u00a0Stewart Copeland<\/strong>,\u00a0Billy Strings<\/strong>, and Sean Lennon, \u201cWAP\u201d carries overtly political overtones, but is a little less heavy-handed than previous tracks.<\/p>\n Yes, the song opens with the line, \u201cLike a president caught in shenanigans with a beauty queen \/ I\u2019m guessing they may not be so innocent as they\u2019d have us believe.\u201d But between Claypool\u2019s cartoonish bounce, the lyrics are layered with Lennon\u2019s symmetrical and instantly familiar Beatles vocal melodies. The result is a commentary that is a little more obfuscated than Les\u2019 recent brand of musical activism. Rather than closing with a call to action, Lennon shares in our communal nihilism, \u201cI\u2019m not sure if history repeats but I\u2019m certain that it rhymes \/ And it makes me wanna die sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n Sean Lennon recently previewed The Claypool Lennon Delirium\u2019s return in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning<\/em><\/a>. He said the band will release its third album, The Great Parrot Ox and The Golden Egg of Empathy<\/em>, early this year and tour behind it in the summer. The 2LP concept album will feature Claypool and Lennon\u2019s literal interpretation of the paperclip problem, a theory that superintelligent AI could run amok and turn the entire Earth into paperclips if it were given the vague instruction \u201ccreate as many paperclips as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou have to be careful how we program these devices,\u201d Lennon said wryly.<\/p>\n Check out the new Claypool Lennon Delirium single, \u201cWAP\u201d, via the player below.
