baby \u2014 the dramatic experience changed my family forever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F2%2F2026%2F01%2Fmaury-baby-hp-1.jpg?quality%3D90%26strip%3Dall%261768841872\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Reanna Madura spent her childhood in the middle of a dark family secret \u2014\u00a0one harbored by the now 25-year-old\u2019s mother, Melissa Rose, who lived in fear that the truth might scar her daughter for life.<\/p>\n<p>Only when she turned 18 did the guilt-ridden parent finally reveal her shame \u2014\u00a0which had haunted the Midwesterner for nearly two decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was a senior in high school, and on a random day, my mom sat me down and said, \u2018You were on the \u201cMaury\u201d show as a paternity test baby,\u201d Reanna, a call center rep living in Chicago, exclusively told The Post. \u201cShe thought I was going to be upset, but I was, like, \u2018Oh, my God, that\u2019s so cool!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>For nearly two decades, Reanna Madura (right) didn\u2019t know that her mother, Melissa Rose (left), had undergone a paternity test on \u201cMaury.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Evan Jenkins for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Melissa, 42, remembers the Gen Zer\u2019s reaction to the news a little differently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was, like, \u2018No f\u2013king way!\u2019\u201d the married mom of three told The Post, recalling that she sighed with relief herself. \u201cIt was one of the first times I\u2019d ever heard her swear.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Melissa was just 16 when she became pregnant by a former boyfriend in late 1999 \u2014 and age 17 when she <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@reannamadura\/video\/7509883983702838571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appeared on the then-hit daytime talk show<\/a> hosted by Maury Povich, 3-month-old Reanna in her arms, back in October 2000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made a phone call to the show because, at the time, you couldn\u2019t just buy an over-the-counter DNA test at your local pharmacy,\u201d said Melissa, who described years of \u201cembarrassment\u201d after opting to air her dirty laundry on nationally syndicated television, all for the sake of her daughter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Melissa Rose wasn\u2019t yet 18 when she sought Maury Povich\u2019s televised help. <span class=\"credit\">@reannamadura\/TikTok<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Melissa Rose was surprised that her daughter called the reveal \u201cso cool.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Evan Jenkins for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Her ex-boyfriend \u2014 whose name she asked The Post to withhold \u2014 had denied fathering Reanna, following a heated argument. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose tests cost around $2,500 back then, and I was just an uneducated teenager with very little guidance, who wanted the best for my kid,\u201d Melissa recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Reanna <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@reannamadura\/photo\/7509162339631942958\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is among the elite and infamous collection<\/a> of Y2K-era kids whose parents \u2014 some young, some na\u00efve, some impoverished, but all entangled in salacious, sex-spawned strife \u2014 sought the help of Povich, a tabloid television legend.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The retired host, now 86, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/12\/lifestyle\/i-was-an-out-of-control-teen-on-the-maury-show-25-years-ago-it-helped-me-turn-my-life-around\/\">left an indelible impression<\/a> on 1990s and 2000s culture, largely due to a policy of offering free DNA evaluations to guests \u2014\u00a0in exchange for the use of their relationship drama as content.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Photos show Reanna Madura  as a baby. <span class=\"credit\">Evan Jenkins for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Paternity test-themed episodes of \u201cMaury\u201d \u2014 which first aired in September 1991 \u2014 sizzled as spicy must-see TV for much of the show\u2019s run.<\/p>\n<p>There were fierce on-air spats between flings-turned-foes. Deadbeat dads who swore that the child in question wasn\u2019t theirs. Screaming, sobbing mothers who sometimes tested over 10 men to determine paternity. <\/p>\n<p>And, of course, there were the \u201cMaury babies,\u201d such as Reanna, unwittingly at the center of the mayhem.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Each segment was brought to a climactic peak \u2014 Povich opening a sealed manila envelope containing the test results, before declaring either \u201cYou are the father!\u201d or \u201cYou are not the father!\u201d as the audience hooted and howled.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Three-month-old Reanna Madura wouldn\u2019t find out about her television debut until she turned 18. <span class=\"credit\">reregurl22<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cI was, like, \u2018Oh, my God, that\u2019s so cool!\u2019\u201d she recalled telling her mother after she learned about her stint on \u201cMaury.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Evan Jenkins for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Those revelations often sent at least one disappointed parent sprinting backstage in despair \u2014 cameramen following in hot pursuit, dutifully capturing every second of the meltdown.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The barely contained chaos kept audiences on the edges of their seats for 31 seasons; the show finally ended in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And while the program often caught flak from detractors who deemed the format exploitative, in part due to the less-than-stellar social status of many show guests, Povich told The Post he never intended to take advantage of those in need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll I ever wanted to do was to find out if we could provide young kids with two active parents in their lives instead of one,\u201d he explained in an interview, adding that he never knew the test results before reading them on camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd on the other side, if the fellow was not the father, I wanted to help these families learn the truth,\u201d the retired journalist said. \u201cI have no regrets.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>While the show is now TV history, the topic of families publicly sharing the otherwise private or intimate details of their children\u2019s lives is as relevant as ever, said NYC psychotherapist Matt Lindquist, who told The Post that oversharing parents run the risk of mentally, emotionally and socially scarring their offspring in the longterm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParents can sometimes make really consequential decisions for their kids without fully thinking through how they will influence a child\u2019s future,\u201d Lindquist, founder <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tribecatherapy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">of Tribeca Therapy<\/a>, explained, emphasizing that he\u2019s not casting aspersions on the \u201cMaury\u201d show, or its guests. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublicizing this very sensitive information for the world to see live, on reruns and resurfaced internet clips can interfere with a child\u2019s ability to define themselves \u2014 they may always feel defined as \u2018that baby on \u201cMaury,&#8217;\u201d \u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Genny Finkel, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gennyfinkellcsw.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a relationship therapist <\/a>on the Upper East Side, warned of a risk of \u201cintergenerational trauma\u201d stemming from the Maury reveals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose kids have had to grow up with one of their most vulnerable, private life experiences being caught on tape without their consent,\u201d she said, telling The Post that feelings of resentment, betrayal and disconnection could begin sprouting in discontented \u201cMaury\u201d kids, as they become adults.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a baby, you\u2019ve been put out there for public consumption, kind of thrown to the wolves, how do you ever trust your parents? And how will that relationship impact the ways you relate to friends, partners or even your own children, who all have access to this personal information about you?\u201d Finkel said.<\/p>\n<p>Reanna insists she feels no resentment towards her mother for making her famous, before even cutting her first tooth. Instead, she hails Melissa as \u201cstrong\u201d for standing up to her ex \u2014 who was, in fact, the father.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Gen Zer said she\u2019d spent much of her early adolescence trying to build a connection with her absent father \u2014\u00a0deciding eventually to drop the idea.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a VHS tape of our episode,\u201d Reanna said. \u201cOnce I watched the video, it was clear my dad never wanted anything to do with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And despite her controversial moment in the spotlight as an infant, Reanna\u2019s grown up to be a happy, well-adjusted youth cheerleading coach and big sister to Melissa\u2019s two youngest children, ages 16 and 12.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love that I\u2019m a \u2018Maury\u2019 baby,\u201d she said. \u201cI tell everyone I meet. It\u2019s my favorite icebreaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reanna\u2019s relaxed attitude toward her bizarre backstory isn\u2019t shared by fellow Midwesterner Makayla Ann, 24. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a \u2018Maury\u2019 baby has come back to haunt me a few times. It\u2019s really embarrassing,\u201d the single mother of one told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Makayla Ann appeared on \u201cMaury\u201d when she was just a toddler. <span class=\"credit\">@probably.manic\/\/TikTok<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The nutrition aide, who didn\u2019t want to share her last name and goes by \u201cKayla\u201d these days, was just three back in 2005, when her mother, Missy, brought her on the show \u2014\u00a0hoping to prove that a man named Freddie was her dad. <\/p>\n<p>Much to Missy\u2019s dismay, he was not.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More than 20 years later, clips of the decades-old bedlam have garnered more than <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@probably.manic\/video\/7590428177932078367?_r=1&amp;_t=ZT-936D04gOaq5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2.5 million views<\/a> online \u2014\u00a0which is how Kayla, then an innocent toddler tucked away in a backstage waiting room with a camera zooming in on her face, eventually learned of her unusual origin story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found out that I was on \u2018Maury\u2019 at 10, when some random person sent me a link to the episode on Facebook,\u201d said Kayla. \u201cI was disgusted. She shared a story about me \u2014 her drama, my paternity \u2014 and it wasn\u2019t hers to tell,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe control over my own story was stolen from me at [age] 3.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since the unwelcome reveal, the relationship with her mother has been strained, Kayla said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Warning: Video below contains graphic language.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\"\/>\n<p>Throughout her adolescence, exhumed snippets from the family\u2019s episode trended on social media, leaving the teen susceptible to bullying.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt went around my high school. I was made fun of. I had a big falling out with a best friend who shared the clip,\u201d Kayla groaned. \u201cLife was really hard for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now caring for a newborn son, Kayla advocates<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/30\/lifestyle\/moms-and-dads-are-hurting-their-kids-through-viral-sharenting-trend\/\"> against parents oversharing<\/a> pictures, videos and personal tidbits online.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so passionate about encouraging mothers and fathers to think twice before [bringing their kids on television] or posting them on the internet.
