One moment, the Tanzanian musician was grinding through end-of-term assessments. The next, reviewing promo materials and finalizing the mixing and mastering of his debut: the self-titled <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">Itar\u00e9<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a challenge,\u201d he tells <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">OkayAfrica<\/span>. \u201cBut I&#8217;m managing it pretty well because it&#8217;s important that I get my education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- placeholder(#1) --><\/p>\n<p>That balance between creativity and practicality feels essential for where he\u2019s headed. With Tanzania\u2019s musical mainstream shaped by the same heavyweight acts for decades, there\u2019s growing momentum behind a new generation eager to define what comes next. Alongside Gen Z artists like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/tanzanias-abigail-chams-is-on-the-brink-of-superstardom\/112766\"><span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Abigail Chams<\/span><\/a>, <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Hevi<\/span>, and <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Kontawa<\/span>, Itar\u00e9 is striving to build his name. What sets him apart is a sonic diversity that has been shaped by years of experiment\u2026and it\u2019s getting recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Apple Music named him one of their <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/us\/curator\/apple-music-up-next\/1532467784\">\u201cUp Next\u201d<\/a> East Africa artists. His track <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pzkKEg36RsU\">\u201cWhere You Want,<\/a>\u201d featuring South Africa\u2019s <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Kane Keid<\/span> and Tanzania\u2019s <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Joh Makini<\/span>, made <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/the-best-east-african-songs-of-2025\/1419489\"><span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">OkayAfrica<\/span>\u2019s Best East African Songs of 2025<\/a>, and he was named one of our <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/the-african-musicians-to-watch-in-2026\/1421012\">artists to watch in 2026.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, his new EP is the clearest sign yet of where he\u2019s headed.<\/p>\n<div data-element-guid=\"d736d339-4526-4849-9045-17937bfe4d5f\" class=\"column youtube small-12 large-12 small-abs-12 large-abs-12\">\n<div class=\"content \" style=\"\">\n<div>\n<p>\n                    <iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/pzkKEg36RsU\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n                <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Born in Mwanza and raised in the Dar-es-Salaam neighborhood of Ilala, the 23-year-old has been building toward this moment for more than a decade. At 13, he was already making songs, shaped by a musical lineage that includes his grandfather and father, both of whom played instruments. His dad introduced him to <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Sade<\/span>, <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Michael Jackson<\/span>, and 1980s disco, music that still influences his taste today.<\/p>\n<p>Like many young Tanzanian artists, Itar\u00e9\u2019s earliest releases lived on SoundCloud. That period, he says, was key to learning how to create with limited resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose early years really taught me how to be resourceful,\u201d he says. \u201cI had this big laptop that made so much noise. I\u2019d play the beat on it, and then use whatever smartphone I had to record. I\u2019d sing the whole song from beginning to end. He was drawn to the energy and rebellion in hip-hop, and artists like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/j-coles-lagos-performance-and-my-depression\/187182\"><span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">J. Cole<\/span><\/a> who made storytelling feel accessible. \u201cI could understand what he was saying, so it made it easier for me to imitate.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But melody eventually won him over. He learned to play the guitar from his father, then continued to develop his skills on his own. He trained his voice by recording and playing it back until it started to work. By the time he began crafting what would become his debut, he had already amassed hundreds of tracks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least 200, maybe 200 plus,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s just what\u2019s in my phone. I don\u2019t know what studios and laptops have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">Itar\u00e9<\/span> EP is just seven songs, but it confidently moves through genres as if he were already a fully formed artist. Itar\u00e9 teamed up with artists from Tanzania\u2019s <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Joh Makini<\/span>, Nigeria\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/interview-wurld-is-rediscovering-the-joy-in-releasing-music\/166430\"><span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">WurlD<\/span><\/a>, South Africa\u2019s <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Kane Keid<\/span> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/tag\/tshego\"><span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Tshego<\/span><\/a>, and India\u2019s <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Remee<\/span>. His collaboration on the song \u201cWhine\u201d with WurlD stands out. \u201cThat\u2019s one of my favorite songs on the EP. I love that song,\u2019 he says. \u2018It just fit him specifically\u2026 It\u2019s so seamless\u2026 he really comes through with those vocals, just going crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His dream collaboration would be with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/google.com\/search?q=okayafrica+wizkid&amp;oq=okayafrica+wizkid&amp;gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyCAgAEEUYJxg5MggIARBFGCcYOzIKCAIQABiABBiiBDIHCAMQABjvBTIKCAQQABiABBiiBDIHCAUQABjvBTIHCAYQABjvBdIBCDE0NjdqMGo0qAIAsAIA&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\"><span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Wizkid<\/span><\/a>. The Nigerian artist first inspired Itar\u00e9 to embrace African music after years of listening to rap. But Itar\u00e9 also knows that great features take time, and every song has to feel intentional. \u201cLike with Tshego, when he got the track [\u2018Milele\u2019], he said he\u2019d been looking to get on something with that sound,\u201d he says. \u201cThe timing was perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even with its variety, the EP is still measured, Itar\u00e9 reveals. He chose to hold back on more experimental tracks to build trust.\u201cI think my mind goes way bolder than what\u2019s on this project. But I didn\u2019t want to go all the way left just yet. I wanted it to be digestible, especially for someone hearing me for the first time, especially from Tanzania.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Itar\u00e9, holding back wasn\u2019t about fear. He wanted to build trust and attune the ear of the Tanzanian listener.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTanzanian music has been a certain way for so long,\u201d he says. \u201cSo with this project, I just wanted to bring people into a different world slowly. Itar\u00e9 sees his generation as uniquely positioned. Raised on the internet, young Tanzanian artists grew up consuming music from all over the world, often at the same time. \u201cWe were listening to artists on SoundCloud while also listening to music from the West and from Africa. That exposure is why there\u2019s so much experimentation and diversity right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He adds, \u201cWhat my generation is doing is creating space for new sounds to grow. We\u2019ve had exposure to different genres, different cultures, and that\u2019s shaping how we make music. My job now is to take some of those risks, so the next artist after me can go even further.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That vision also means letting go of old rules, including the idea of gatekeepers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just feel like it doesn\u2019t make sense,\u201d he says. \u201cMusic evolves. There\u2019s always going to be new artists coming through with new sounds.
