A leading Perth trademark lawyer has explained what could have prompted David and Victoria Beckham to ask their son, Brooklyn Peltz Beckham, to sign away the rights to his name, which the expert called \u201cextraordinary\u201d and \u201cbizarre\u201d.<\/p>\n

The ongoing Beckham family feud boiled over on Tuesday after Brooklyn posted a lengthy and explosive statement to Instagram claiming his parents have endlessly attempted to destroy his marriage to Nicola Peltz through media leaks and sabotage.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old confirmed long-running rumours that tensions peaked at his Palm Beach wedding, saying Victoria hijacked his first dance and \u201cdanced very inappropriately\u201d on him in front of 500 guests.<\/p>\n

Brooklyn also alleged David and Victoria tried to \u201cbribe\u201d him into signing away the rights to his name.<\/p>\n

\u201cWeeks before our big day, my parents repeatedly pressured and attempted to bribe me into signing away the rights to my name, which would have affected me, my wife and our future children,\u201d his statement said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were adamant on me signing before my wedding date because then the terms of the deal would be initiated. My holdout affected the payday, and they have never treated me the same since.\u201d<\/p>\n

Intellectual property lawyer Dave Stewart at Bennett Lawyers found the idea of Brooklyn not being able to use his surname for the benefit of trying to promote himself \u201cquite extraordinary\u201d and \u201cpretty bizarre\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf this allegation is correct, his parents have proposed to him that he can no longer use his name or his surname for the purposes of promoting himself, given he\u2019s a model and an aspiring chef, that\u2019s quite a big deal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom their perspective, if he decided to go off and set up a restaurant and call it, Beckham\u2019s, or called it Brooklyn Beckham\u2019s, or whatever, then I guess their complaint is he\u2019s benefiting from the goodwill and reputation that they\u2019ve built up in their surname over a period of decades.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the other hand, he should be able to use his own name to go out and and promote himself and any businesses that he decides to attach himself to and if this is correct, is it some sort of turf war between him and his parents where they are so reliant upon using their name to endorse products and services?<\/p>\n

\u201cCould it be said that they don\u2019t want the competition?\u201d<\/p>\n

Manchester United\u2019s golden boy and his Spice Girl wife have spent decades creating Brand Beckham \u2014 combining fame, fashion and football to redefine modern stardom.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir brand has always been about control of narrative, image, and legacy,\u201d PR expert Mark Borkowski told the BBC<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n

This mirrors what Brooklyn said in his statement. That his \u201cparents have controlled narratives in the press about our family\u201d for his entire life, describing the allegedly \u201cperformative social media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships\u201d as \u201ca fixture of the life I was born into.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy family values public promotion and endorsements above all else.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrand Beckham comes first.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Stewart said it was \u201cstrange thing\u201d for the Beckhams to ask a relative let alone a son but was \u201ccertainly possible\u201d.<\/p>\n

Victoria registered Brooklyn Beckham\u2019s name as a trademark in the UK on December 22 in 2016 when he was 16-years-old for an array of goods and services like shave lotions, body scrubs and gels, fragrance, clothing, footwear, toys and more.<\/p>\n

It is owned by Victoria as a \u201cparent and guardian\u201d of Brooklyn at the time and will expire in December this year.<\/p>\n

This perhaps adds truth to Brooklyn\u2019s claims of why his parents \u201crepeatedly pressured\u201d him to sign away his name rights so they could sort out the issue of ownership before the deadline.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose sorts of arrangements are typically pretty lucrative for any sort of celebrity. So if what he\u2019s saying is correct, then the idea is to carve him out from those opportunities,\u201d Mr Stewart said.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiven he is no longer a child, Victoria Beckham cannot hold herself out any longer as holding Brooklyn Beckham\u2019s name as a trade mark in her capacity as \u2018parent and guardian\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

David on Wednesday spoke in public for the first time since the bombshell allegations where he discussed the dangers of social media.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have always spoken about social media and the power of social media. For the good and for the bad,\u201d he said on CNBC\u2019s financial program Squawk Box.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bad we\u2019ve talked about with what the kid can access these days, it can be dangerous, but what I have found personally, especially with my kids as well, use it for the right reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n

Victoria is yet to address the claims.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
