MARLBORO \u2014 From abstract to figurative, the hooked rugs by Beth McDermet surprise and delight. The rugs currently on view at the Marlboro Community Center through Feb. 28 present a burst of color, diverse imagery and a wide variety of compositions, according to a news release.\u00a0McDermet challenges our preconceptions of what a hooked rug can be. All of the rugs in the exhibition are her designs. She starts with a drawing, transfers the design to linen and begins the hooking process.<\/p>\n
A reception for the artist is planned for this Friday, Jan. 23, from 4 to 6 p.m.<\/p>\n
One of McDermet’s rugs is titled: \u201cShape Shifting\u201d and her note under the rug \u201cIn life, nothing stays the same.\u201d In this exhibition, all of the rugs are extraordinary and each one is an individual statement by the artist, according to the release.<\/p>\n
McDermet\u00a0has notes next to every rug in the show. \u201cDoing Cartwheels\u201d looks like a totally abstract image. This rug is based on a photo from Hubble Telescope of the Cartwheel Galaxy.<\/p>\n
One of the most unusual hooked rugs in the exhibition is \u201cStained Glass Treasures.\u201d The idea that a rug made of wool could interpret the light coming through a stained glass window can be a daunting creative challenge. McDermet’s ability to convey the luminosity of this translucent material is pushing the boundaries of hook rug genre.<\/p>\n
The Marlboro Community Center is open Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
