Harasaki:\u00a0There used to be a rocket scientist named Dr. Hideo Itokawa. He\u00a0was\u00a0a renowned figure, often called the father of Japan space development. Dr. Itokawa had his own theory\u00a0that,\u00a0substance cold tau\u00a0particles existed in the universe. And he watched DRUM TAO\u00a0performance before\u00a0\u2026\u00a0he has passed away. But when he saw\u00a0the DRUM TAO\u00a0performance \u2026\u00a0he felt that, you know,\u00a0DRUM TAO\u00a0music had the power to energize and encourage people.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Harasaki: It\u2019s very difficult, actually.\u00a0Many of them, you know, they\u00a0entered\u00a0DRUM TAO\u00a0after they graduated from high school,\u00a0like,\u00a018 years old.\u00a0Then \u2026 they are forbidden to have a cell\u00a0phone,\u00a0they are forbidden to have a laptop. And they\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have\u00a0paycheck, because\u00a0they are\u00a0trainee. All they have to do is\u00a0focus on\u00a0developing their\u00a0skill of type of drumming. And\u00a0so\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0very far\u00a0away from their\u00a0regular, normal life.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A\u00a0trainee\u00a0period is one year.\u00a0So, after a year, they\u00a0have to\u00a0have\u00a0a test to, you know, promote.\u00a0If\u00a0they cannot pass it, they\u00a0have to\u00a0quit.\u00a0\u2026\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0very\u00a0severe and tough\u00a0to survive in this\u00a0lifestyle.\u00a0The\u00a0only way that they can\u00a0communicate with the others, you know, other than, you know,\u00a0DRUM TAO\u00a0people, is just, you know, writing the letter. \u2026\u00a0So\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0very unique\u00a0and unusual for them.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Harasaki: A taiko drum performance \u2026 makes\u00a0a very huge\u00a0sound. \u2026\u00a0And, of course, and [the audience] can feel the vibration, but they cannot feel it on\u00a0YouTube. \u2026\u00a0Of course, we sell DVDs, [and] we put some in a video on YouTube, but it\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0deliver everything of DRUM TAO. Only live\u00a0performance\u00a0can make them feel real DRUM\u00a0TAO. \u2026\u00a0Feeling the vibration and beat is\u00a0the essential.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Well\u00a0some people say that, you know, the sound and\u00a0beat\u00a0and the vibration of taiko drum is like the sound of the mother\u2019s heartbeat that you heard when you were in [your] mother\u2019s womb. So\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0why the vibration and the beat of Japanese taiko drum touches many people\u2019s\u00a0hearts, probably.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Harasaki: DRUM TAO\u00a0was formed 32 years ago, and back then, you know, there were many professional and amateur\u00a0taiko\u00a0troupes\u00a0in Japan, as they still do today. But\u00a0almost all\u00a0of them performed in a traditional style. But DRUM TAO\u00a0founder\u00a0Ikuo\u00a0Fujitaka was looking for something different, a more and a modern way to entertain people.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Then he had\u00a0an opportunity to see the Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas,\u00a0Myst\u00e8re.\u00a0That show\u00a0inspired\u00a0him greatly, and\u00a0he made up his mind to create an entertainment show like that using\u00a0the\u00a0type of drum.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Since then, Fujitaka\u00a0has brought top performers to Las\u00a0Vegas\u00a0time and time again\u00a0to see various circulatory show productions, and to study how world-class entertainment is created, and how to entertain audience, and how top-tier shows are built.\u00a0So\u00a0I would say that\u00a0Cirque\u00a0du\u00a0Soleil\u00a0has had a\u00a0tremendous influence on all\u00a0DRUM TAO\u00a0members, including me.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Harasake:\u00a0Basically, we\u00a0live in the middle of\u00a0the nature, and someone told us, you know, we live at the edge of\u00a0the civilization. So, in that place, we composed numbers inspired\u00a0by that stuff.\u00a0There is no\u00a0specific storyline, but I hope\u00a0the audience can feel\u00a0our background scenery and Japanese culture\u00a0\u2026 [such as]\u00a0self-defense and umbrellas,\u00a0and\u00a0the other instruments, like a Japanese guitar, called shamisen, or Japanese harp,\u00a0called koto, not only taiko drum. So,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0kind\u00a0of\u00a0full\u00a0of Japanese culture.\u00a0Unfortunately, there is no anime on our stage, no manga, but, you know,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0full of\u00a0Japanese culture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
