Tenacious D<\/a>\u2019s Kyle Gass<\/a> is recounting the \u201chuge\u201d ramifications he and his band faced as a result of a controversial, improvised joke about the first assassination attempt against Donald Trump <\/a>in July 2024.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cI\u2019m human, I made a mistake. I was going for a joke. But timing is everything. If there was ever a \u2018too soon,\u2019 it was this,\u201d said Gass, who founded the comedy rock band with Jack Black<\/a>, in an interview with Rolling Stone<\/a> magazine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Black and fans were celebrating Gass\u2019 64th birthday at a show in Sydney just after a gunman had targeted then-GOP presidential candidate Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n When Black asked Gass to make a wish onstage before blowing out the birthday candles on his cake, Gass joked<\/a>: \u201cDon\u2019t miss Trump next time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The moment sparked swift conservative backlash and a since-removed apology post<\/a> from Gass before Black announced<\/a> that the band was calling off its tour and pausing all future creative endeavors. Black said he was \u201cblindsided\u201d by his bandmate\u2019s comments and emphasized that he \u201cwould never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Gass told Rolling Stone that he had \u201ctouched the stove,\u201d and started to realize the impact of his comments as he and others partied in his hotel room after the show.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThere was no way out. Just panic\u2026 It became a worldwide story, which seems so ridiculous now in comparison with all the shit that\u2019s been [happening],\u201d he told the magazine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Gass said he couldn\u2019t watch a clip of his remarks and recalled the fallout, including his longtime talent agent dropping him<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cIt\u2019s like a tsunami of shit rolling over you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cAnd then there\u2019s the regret. Like, \u2018Why would I do that?\u2019 I just didn\u2019t put it together.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Gass said he doesn\u2019t begrudge Black his statement at the time and has since hashed things out with his bandmate.
