According to a press release from&#13;<br \/>\nSony, the two companies have signed \u201ca memorandum of understanding to confirm&#13;<br \/>\ntheir intentions to establish a joint venture that will assume Sony\u2019s home&#13;<br \/>\nentertainment business, with TCL holding 51% and Sony holding 49% of its&#13;<br \/>\nshares.\u201d This new joint venture would be in charge of Sony\u2019s home entertainment&#13;<br \/>\ndivision, including TVs and audio equipment, handling the full process \u201cfrom&#13;<br \/>\nproduct development and design to manufacturing, sales, logistics, and customer&#13;<br \/>\nservice for products,\u201d according to the press release.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"internal-link lb-show\" href=\"https:\/\/www.audioholics.com\/news\/tcl-sony\/SonyBravia8.jpg\/image_large\/image\" title=\"Sony Bravia 8\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Sony\u2019s&#13;<br \/>\nexcellent BRAVIA TVs, which celebrated their\u00a020th anniversary in 2025,&#13;<br \/>\nwould continue to be produced under this new partnership, though TCL\u2019s majority&#13;<br \/>\nstake in the joint venture would give the Chinese company the power to&#13;<br \/>\ndetermine the future of Sony\u2019s product line. The two companies are proceeding&#13;<br \/>\nwith discussions with a goal of \u201cexecuting definitive binding agreements\u201d by&#13;<br \/>\nthe end of March 2026. There will be regulatory approvals to sort out, and&#13;<br \/>\nother conditions to satisfy, but the two companies expect that the new joint&#13;<br \/>\nventure will commence its operations in April of 2027.<\/p>\n<p>The&#13;<br \/>\naim of the new company appears to be to advance the Sony brand by leveraging&#13;<br \/>\nSony\u2019s high-quality picture and audio technology, along with its premium brand&#13;<br \/>\nrecognition and operational expertise (including supply chain management),&#13;<br \/>\nwhile utilizing TCL\u2019s advanced display technology and panel production&#13;<br \/>\ncapacity. The company already&#13;<br \/>\nproduces panels for other TV makers, and the global market for large TVs&#13;<br \/>\ncontinues to expand in the era of high-res gaming and streaming video. TCL\u2019s seemingly unstoppable\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\ntrajectory of growth would not have been possible without the absorption&#13;<br \/>\nof existing tech and resources from other companies. In 2020, for example, TCL CSoT&#13;<br \/>\ntook over Samsung Display\u2019s LCD factory in Suzhou, China, as Samsung sold off&#13;<br \/>\nover 2,000 patents relating to LCD technology. But what began as a budget brand is now \u201cfocusing on mid-to-high-end&#13;<br \/>\nmarkets around the world,\u201d according to TCL. The company reached a big&#13;<br \/>\nmilestone along that path in 2019, when TCL was the first company to introduce&#13;<br \/>\nLCD TVs with miniLED backlighting. A version of that technology is now used in&#13;<br \/>\nhigh-end LCD TVs from virtually all major brands. This rapid transformation has&#13;<br \/>\nseen TCL competing not only with Chinese rivals like Hisense, but also with the&#13;<br \/>\ntop premium TV manufacturers, such as Samsung and LG.&#13;<br \/>\nLast year\u2019s QM7K Series,&#13;<br \/>\nfor example, included Bang &amp; Olufsen audio and topped out with a massive&#13;<br \/>\n115-inch model with a $20K price tag to match. Perhaps Sony\u2019s partnership with TCL means that future Sony TVs can be&#13;<br \/>\nexpected to support Dolby Vision 2, but it\u2019s too early to tell.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kaveh&#13;<br \/>\nVahdat is a founder and CEO at\u00a0RiseAngle, a San&#13;<br \/>\nFrancisco company focused on video game development. Vahdat spoke with <span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/home-entertainment\/sony-tcl-joint-venture-tv-audio-products\/\">CNET<\/a><\/span> about the Sony\/TCL partnership,&#13;<br \/>\nsaying that \u201ceven well-known, premium brands are finding it hard to compete on&#13;<br \/>\ntheir own against companies like Samsung and LG that control more of the&#13;<br \/>\nhardware stack and ship at massive volume.\u201d Unlike Samsung and LG, Sony does&#13;<br \/>\nnot\u00a0 have a display division producing&#13;<br \/>\nits own panels. LG Display produces the WOLED panels used in the Sony BRAVIA 8 TV, for example, and Samsung Display&#13;<br \/>\nproduces the QD-OLED panels used in Sony\u2019s high-end BRAVIA 8 II. At this&#13;<br \/>\nstage, the announcement reflects an initial memorandum of understanding, and&#13;<br \/>\nfurther details are still under discussion. We will communicate further at the&#13;<br \/>\nappropriate timing when there is confirmed information to share.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014&#13;<br \/>\nSony<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So far, we know&#13;<br \/>\nnothing about what will happen to Sony\u2019s line of AV receivers, soundbars, and&#13;<br \/>\nother home audio products. But fans of Sony\u2019s OLED TVs have real cause for&#13;<br \/>\nconcern. TCL has never been a supporter of OLED technology, and continues to&#13;<br \/>\npush its LCD-based panels, which do enjoy the advantage of higher overall&#13;<br \/>\nbrightness (even if they can\u2019t match OLED\u2019s perfect blacks and pixel-level&#13;<br \/>\ndimming control). It seems highly unlikely that the joint venture controlling&#13;<br \/>\nSony\u2019s future would continue buying OLED panels from Samsung and LG, when the&#13;<br \/>\nwhole point of the partnership is to take advantage of TCL\u2019s manufacturing&#13;<br \/>\npower.
