This week\u2019s new album comes from the Pacifica Quartet<\/a>, the ensemble in residence at the University of Indiana<\/a>, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a collection of chamber works by Erich Wolfgang Korngold.\u00a0<\/p>\n The son of a Viennese music critic, Korngold was a child prodigy who wrote his first piece when he was 7 years old and had a ballet premier at the Vienna Court Opera when he was 13. <\/p>\n Korngold went on to build a career as an opera composer, but when the Nazis came to power, he left Austria for the United States, where he found work in Hollywood. From 1935 to 1947, he scored 16 films for Warner Brothers, including \u201cCaptain Blood,\u201d \u201cThe Sea Hawk\u201d and \u201cThe Adventures of Robin Hood.\u201d <\/p>\n WPR\u2019s \u201cWisconsin Today\u201d newsletter keeps you connected to the state you love without feeling overwhelmed. He died in relative obscurity in 1957.<\/p>\n The selections on this new Pacifica Quartet album show all of these sides of the composer. His String Sextet and his First String Quartet reflect the Viennese sound world of Gustav Mahler and Arnold Schoenberg, two of his early influences.
