They were greeted by Mexico\u2019s Tourism Minister Josefina Rodr\u00edguez Zamora, Mexico\u2019s Ambassador to Spain Quirino Ordaz, as well as other Mexican officials and cultural representatives.<\/span><\/p>\n For the fair\u2019s 46th edition, <\/span>Mexico has been featured as FITUR\u2019s partner country<\/span><\/a>, presenting a historic program that includes tourist destinations in all 32 states. Boasting the largest stand space in the America\u2019s section, Mexico aims to speak to a global tourism market by emphasizing the essence of Mexican culture.<\/span><\/p>\n During her Thursday morning press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum referred to the monarch\u2019s visit to Mexico\u2019s pavilion as \u201csymbolic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThey were accompanied by representatives of the Indigenous communities. It\u2019s symbolic,\u201d Sheinbaum said. \u201cIt seems symbolic that the king and queen of Spain have come to recognize the Indigenous peoples of today [at FITUR] \u2026 We will insist on the importance of this recognition, because it heals wounds.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The monarchs greeted the large Mexican delegation on a stage decorated for the occasion and reportedly showed great interest in Mexico\u2019s proposals during a friendly conversation with Mexican officials.<\/span><\/p>\n The Spanish royals have not had contact with Mexican officials since 2019, when former President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador <\/span>demanded an apology in 2019<\/span><\/a>, for abuses faced by Indigenous peoples during the conquest of Tenochtitl\u00e1n in 1521, preceding\u00a0 to Spanish colonization.<\/span><\/p>\n Spain \u201cvigorously\u201d rejected the request. While economic, social and cultural ties between the two countries run deep, political ties turned frosty after the falling out.<\/span><\/p>\n Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Rodr\u00edguez said she appreciated the royal\u2019s appearance at Mexico\u2019s pavilion amidst the tragedy that recently hit the country after a passenger train derailed in the province of C\u00f3rdoba, killing dozens of people.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI was deeply grateful that they came to visit us in spite of this situation,\u201d she said.
