And woe is she!<\/p>\n<p>At \u201cCarousel,\u201d the dreary plod that premiered Thursday in the Sundance Film Festival, woe is we.<\/p>\n<p>The title of director Rachel Lambert\u2019s drama could refer to a carnival merry-go-round that goes in circles with many ups and downs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Or, it might be nodding to the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that hooks you with lush romance but really is about complex, messy adult relationships.<\/p>\n<p>I, for one, thought of the conveyor belt at the airport baggage claim. You stand there with the dregs of the Earth; wait and wait and wait and wait and then go home.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--more inline-module--columnist inline-module--more--thirds\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading subsection-heading subsection-heading--single-line \">\n\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"subsection-heading__sub\">Johnny Oleksinski<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Chris Pine and Jenny Slate play two former lovers, Noah and Rebecca, who reunite in Cleveland, Ohio, during a new phase in their sad, sad lives. Before you decide that\u2019s sweet, know that they go to great lengths to never enjoy being around each other.<\/p>\n<p>Noah is a doctor for a family practice that was co-owned by his late father and a guy named Sam (Sam Waterston), who is possibly now married to Noah\u2019s mother (Katey Sagal).\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Noah (Chris Pine) and Rebecca (Jenny Slate) reunite after years apart in \u201cCarousel.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The relationships and timeline here are not-legally-able-to-drive blurry, and on purpose it would seem. Everyone\u2019s too depressed to dwell on details. I didn\u2019t realize Hel\u00e9ne Yorke\u2019s secretary was Noah\u2019s sister till almost an hour into the film.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca, who has a void in her life, has come back from Washington DC, where she worked in politics, to help her parents sell their house. By happenstance, she winds up as Noah\u2019s daughter Maya\u2019s (Abby Ryder Fortson) debate coach.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The old flames spot each other one night from across a bar. He pays for her drinks, stares at her stone-faced and leaves.<\/p>\n<p>Love is the air!<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Noah sees his ex from across a bar. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Maya, like everybody here, has got problems too. She suffers from depression and anxiety attacks since her parents\u2019 divorce. If she forgets her homework on the counter, for instance, she\u2019ll start screaming and pounding her fists on the dashboard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although Noah hovers over his teen daughter obsessively every time she gets a paper cut, he\u2019s completely unfazed by her alarming tantrums.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After a particularly violent one, Noah and Rebecca fight over how best to parent Maya, who obviously needs help, in a scene that\u2019s so insufferably long and cold you start to dream a groundhog will pop out and end it early.<\/p>\n<p>Pine, who\u2019s starred in a lot of stinkers since \u201cStar Trek,\u201d is admirably sensitive and shows range he hasn\u2019t before. Good for him. And Slate is a reliably wonderful actress who fits snuggly in these thrift-store worlds of modern non-commitment. The pair doesn\u2019t have much chemistry though since their characters share a hobby of being whiny and off-putting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cCarousel\u201d is ultimately a dreary slog. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Breaking up the drudgery is one of the strangest montages I\u2019ve ever seen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After dropping Maya off for a flight at Cleveland Airport, Noah heads to the terminal bar and gets sloshed. Cut to this blotto dude in <em>Nashville <\/em>at another airport bar. We never see the plane. He falls asleep on the floor by a gate, wakes up, buys a ticket and then flies back to Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s then we\u2019re pretty sure he\u2019s an alcoholic. The movie ends less than 10 minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarousel\u201d is one of those tundra, dimly-lit living-room movies that snobs defend as closer to \u201creal life.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Real life isn\u2019t romantic. Real life isn\u2019t exciting. Real life isn\u2019t witty. Real life isn\u2019t colorful. Real life doesn\u2019t get better.
