\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\nBehind the scenes, the logistics of Washington Mardi Gras brought some surprises, but with the help of her mother, Jennifer Heebe, Sarah Heebe has been able to balance a rigorous school schedule and the required prep for her reign as queen.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, her mom was back home in New Orleans with a kitchen table covered in index cards, trying to figure out charts for events\u00a0\u2014 and enjoying the process. Jennifer Heebe was herself a Washington Mardi Gras princess in 1986.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Sarah Heebe says she didn\u2019t realize \u201chow many little things were involved.\u201d Even so, her wardrobe planning has been stress-free. She built a spreadsheet for her necessary outfits, and with the help of New Orleans designer Suzanne Perrone, she\u2019s ready to go.<\/p>\n
For Sarah Heebe, the wardrobe and the pageantry fit naturally alongside her academic life. She has a long history of taking things that seem intimidating and making them approachable \u2014 including her award-winning capstone paper at Metairie Park Country Day School: \u201cQuantum Armageddon or Elysium?: How Quantum Computing Might Change the World.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOnce I learn how not to be intimidated by something, I can help other people learn the same,\u201d she said. \u201cEven with things people might think are frivolous.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

That instinct shows up in the details of her reign. Her breakfast theme is \u201cNight at the Museum,\u201d a nod to her love of museums and storytelling. The movie tie-in, she says, makes it more accessible for her generation.<\/p>\n
At Yale, Sarah Heebe says she is known among her friends for how often she talks about Louisiana.<\/p>\n
\u201cI never thought of myself as a classic Louisianan,\u201d she said. \u201cBut the more I\u2019ve grown, the more I want to represent my state \u2014 and do it in a positive way.\u201d<\/p>\n
Being away from home has sharpened that feeling. She misses the warm weather, oak-lined streets and po-boys. College, she said, gave her the distance to see Louisiana with fresh eyes.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019d certainly like to return,\u201d she said. \u201cNot just because the food is amazing, but because of the culture. It\u2019s home.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Her mother sees that same pull.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s a smart girl,\u201d Jennifer Heebe said. \u201cBut much more important than that, she has a heart of gold. She\u2019s said all along that she wants to come home to New Orleans to work. She\u2019s a Louisiana girl through and through.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
