{"id":2248315,"date":"2026-01-24T11:08:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-24T11:08:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2248315"},"modified":"2026-01-24T11:08:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T11:08:18","slug":"forever-a-punk-band-the-menzingers-bringing-maturing-sound-to-archer-music-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/forever-a-punk-band-the-menzingers-bringing-maturing-sound-to-archer-music-hall\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Forever a punk band&#8217;: The Menzingers bringing &#8216;maturing&#8217; sound to Archer Music Hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>ALLENTOWN, Pa. \u2014 The inherent limitation of punk rock music since its late 1970s founding was that it never got to grow up.<\/p>\n<p>Founded by young, DIY bands who played energetic, stripped-down music that rejected the overproduced corporate sound of the time, punk seemed forever trapped in the simplicity of immaturity.<\/p>\n<p>Seminal acts such as The Ramones never progressed, or burned out quickly \u2014 The Sex Pistols after just four years, and even the more sophisticated The Clash lasted just 10.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty years after punk&#8217;s founding, Scranton-born, Philadelphia-based punk band The Menzingers seem to be changing that.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\" data-align-center=\"\">\n<div class=\"Quote-wrapper\">\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"Quote\">\n<blockquote><p>The Menzingers will headline a show at Allentown&#8217;s Archer Music Hall at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Archer Music Hall website<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The group&#8217;s recent albums \u2014 2019&#8217;s &#8220;Hello Exile&#8221; and 2023&#8217;s &#8220;Some of It Was True&#8221; \u2014 have given a glimpse of what punk could become if it matured.<\/p>\n<p>And the group is ready to release an eighth album that will take that even further, The Menzingers singer\/guitarist Tom May said in a recent phone call from his South Philadelphia home.<\/p>\n<p>Before that record comes out, The Menzingers will headline a show at Allentown&#8217;s Archer Music Hall at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24. Doors open at 5.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the impending snowstorm, the time was changed from 6:30. The performance is scheduled to end by 10:05 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Fewer than 100 tickets, at $48.05 for general admission standing, remain available <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.archermusichall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">at the Archer website<\/a>or the venue box office at 939 Hamilton St., Allentown. Elevated seating is nearly sold out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome artists talk about reinventing themselves,&#8221; May said. &#8220;We didn\u2019t reinvent ourselves and we didn\u2019t reach back into the past and try to recreate something we\u2019ve already done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[But] we have been practicing and learning more instruments, so there\u2019s a lot more instrumental depth to the record.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMusically, I think it\u2019s a very good representation of where you would think our career would be going as a fan of the band. It\u2019s kind of an interesting thing to me to be in our late 30s and still doing this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\" data-align-center=\"\">\n<div class=\"Quote-wrapper\">\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"Quote\">\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;There\u2019s also been a new peace has happened. We\u2019ve gotten to see much of the world and been able to really reflect on our career up to this point.&#8221; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Menzingers guitarist\/vocalist Tom May<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But even with punk remaining the band&#8217;s touchstone, The Menzingers now have experienced enough of life to have a different perspective, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So much has happened,&#8221; May said. \u201cWhen I was young, my dad always used to say, \u2018The bigger the kid, the bigger the problem.\u2019 And I kind of feel like that hasn\u2019t stopped. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And bigger, beautiful things \u2014 like there\u2019s, [vocalist\/guitarist] Greg [Barnett] from the band had a kid, they\u2019ve been able to take some time off. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There\u2019s been divorces, there\u2019s been family members and friends passing away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there\u2019s also been a new peace has happened. We\u2019ve gotten to see much of the world and been able to really reflect on our career up to this point. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So that\u2019s been kind of the good parts. We try to reflect that in the record. which \u2014 while still definitely punk \u2014 included hints of Americana and country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some of the earlier records were big successes in that they completely changed our lifestyle at the time,&#8221; for me changed my thinking about music production and songwriting more than any of the other ones. That record for us was a big step.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said that working with Grammy-nominated producer Brad Cook, who also has worked with Bon Iver, The War on Drugs and others, also changed The Menzingers&#8217; approach.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\" data-align-center=\"\">\n<div class=\"Quote-wrapper\">\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"Quote\">\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;There\u2019s actually a lot of more musicality in things that are imperfect.&#8221; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Menzingers guitarist\/vocalist Tom May<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;We had to do things a certain way,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Like the norms of any type of industry or art process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But he said the band told Cook it &#8220;wanted to make, like, a punk record, right? Like The Replacements of something like that. And we went in and he kept on there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>May said the band &#8220;recorded that record actually in two weeks \u2014 it\u2019s the shortest amount of time that we ever spent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the tracks were [recorded] live,&#8221; he said. \u201cAnd from that, we took that experience of \u2018We do these things in a way that is how you\u2019re going to end of playing it live.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There\u2019s actually a lot of more musicality in things that are imperfect. And not speaking for the whole band, but that\u2019s how it was for me: On \u2018Some of It Was True,\u2019 we finally kind of smashed that paradigm that existed, at least in my mind.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Forever a punk band<\/h3>\n<p>Despite The Menzingers&#8217; growth and new &#8220;maturity,&#8221; May said it will always be a punk band.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel that way so much,&#8221; May said. &#8220;When you\u2019re younger, some older people in your life or authority figures, when you\u2019re getting into punk rock [they say], \u2018Oh, it\u2019s going to be a phase\u2019 or \u2018You\u2019ll get over it.\u2019 And a lot of people do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s funny. I still listen to The Ramones at least once every couple weeks. The Clash constantly. And I revisit some of those older punk bands that I never really listened to.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\" data-align-center=\"\">\n<div class=\"Quote-wrapper\">\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"Quote\">\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou can\u2019t stay the same. &#8230; You got to incorporate your experiences into what you\u2019re doing.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Menzingers guitarist\/vocalist Tom May<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s also the idea that friends or people who live by each other or whatever can get instruments and then play them, and the focus isn\u2019t necessarily on the musicianship or who\u2019s the most technically proficient. It comes down to a bunch of emotions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd there\u2019s something about people getting together, being that loud, being at a show, having the release \u2014 whether it\u2019s the moshing, or all of those things that kind of exist at shows. I think that\u2019s just never going to go away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, like the romanticization of the things that happened in the past are always going to be reinterpreted and pushed forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>May said, &#8220;Anybody can get a guitar, some way or another, and there\u2019s always going to be groups of people who come together and do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twenty years into The Menzingers, May said, \u201cto me it feels incredible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fact that we are able to do this, stay best friends and be family for 20 years, and touring with the same crew members, like, it is look at it like a legitimate career. It is a lifelong career. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Doing something that started out in youth and it\u2019s typically strained by the fact that it\u2019s a youthful endeavor, and we\u2019re still at it 20 years later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut that time element doesn\u2019t really exist for us, \u2018cause we continue to change the way that we write music and change the way that we reflect our lives in the lyrics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t stay the same. There are some bands I love that stayed the same, but I feel like most of them that stayed the same, I feel like most of them just had an explosion \u2014 released everything in a few years and called it quits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou got to incorporate your experiences into what you\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd here\u2019s to 20 more. I love it.
