These episodes deal with societal woes like drug\/alcohol abuse, crime, and violence \u2014 or, alternatively, death and other facts of life \u2014 in PSA-like storylines that were often resolved by the end of the hour or half-hour.<\/p>\n<p>And very special episodes were often \u201ccynical marketing opportunities as much as a desire to serve the public,\u201d Arthur Smith, a former assistant curator at the Paley Center for Media, explained to <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/entertainment\/archive\/2015\/07\/very-special-episode\/398432\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Atlantic<\/a><\/em> in 2015. \u201cVery special episodes were always scheduled for sweeps weeks, and so clearly had ratings expectations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But <em>New Yorker<\/em> critic Emily Nussbaum said these ratings grabs might have made a different in viewers\u2019 hearts and minds nevertheless. \u201cI do wonder if some VSEs had social impact,\u201d she told the magazine. \u201cJust because something is bad art doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s not effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the best-received very special episodes have remained in viewers\u2019 memories for ages. The worst, meanwhile, live on in infamy. Here are our picks for both categories.<\/p>\n<h2>The Worst<\/h2>\n<p><strong>4. <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/show\/hannah-montana\/\">Hannah Montana<\/a><\/em>: \u201cNo Sugar, Sugar\u201d<\/strong> \u2014<em>Hannah Montana<\/em> missed the mark as it depicted Oliver (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/mitchel-musso\/\">Mitchel Musso<\/a>) getting a diabetes diagnosis in a canceled episode called \u201cNo Sugar, Sugar.\u201d The original storyline had Oliver getting the nickname \u201cSugar Boy\u201d as his friends tried to prevent him from eating any type of sugar, which is a misconception about diabetes, according to <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/parade.com\/47831\/parade\/hannah-montana-diabetes-episode\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parade<\/a><\/em>. Amid protests from parents who saw the episode early, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/network\/disney-channel\/\">Disney Channel<\/a> pulled the episode, per <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Entertainment_News\/2008\/11\/05\/Disney-pulls-Montana-diabetes-episode\/85891225898453\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UPI<\/a>. And a re-shot episode, written in collaboration with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, aired nearly a year later as \u201cUptight (Oliver\u2019s Alright).\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/show\/full-house\/\">Full House<\/a><\/em>: \u201cShape Up\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 When DJ (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/candace-cameron-bure\/\">Cameron Candace Bure<\/a>) starts developing an eating disorder in this episode, she gets cringe-worthy advice from the adults in her life. \u201cDeej, if you wanna lose a couple of pounds, all you have to do is eat sensibly,\u201d Aunt Becky (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/lori-loughlin\/\">Lori Loughlin<\/a>) tells her, before launching into a diet-culture babble. \u201cYou could have boiled fish, lean chicken without the skin, fresh fruits, delicious steamed vegetables, a nice whole grain pasta with a light tomato sauce and just a sprinkling of parmesan cheese.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Full House - DJ doesn&#039;t feel happy with how she looks\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sQUNJ3p2kTo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>2. <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/show\/glee\/\">Glee<\/a><\/em>: \u201cShooting Star\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 <em>Glee<\/em> tried incorporating many serious issues, and this episode, as its distasteful title might indicate, was one of the very special episodes that went awry. The sound of gunshots puts Lima High into lockdown, but it turns out the gunfire was just an accidental discharge by a gun Becky (Lauren Potter) brought to school. Soon, everything was right as rain, with no lasting consequences for the students or staff, making this episode feel like a cheap ploy for viewer attention.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Glee - Shooting Star - School Shooting - Full\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BZwNZDBncq4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>1. <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/show\/saved-by-the-bell-1989\/\">Saved by the Bell<\/a><\/em>: \u201cJessie\u2019s Song\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 In this VSE, Jessie (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/elizabeth-berkley\/\">Elizabeth Berkley<\/a>) gets hooked on caffeine pills to deal with her stressful schedule. And in the cringe-worthy climax, Jessie starts singing The Pointer Sisters before breaking down: \u201cI\u2019m so excited! I\u2019m so excited! I\u2019m so\u2026 scared!\u201d (In <em>Saved by the Bell<\/em>\u2019s defense, the writers <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2016\/11\/saved-by-the-bell-jessie-spano-caffeine-speed-excerpt.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wanted to depict a speed addiction<\/a> instead of a caffeine pill habit, but NBC censors shot down the former idea.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Saved by the Bell | &quot;I&#039;m So Excited&quot;: Jessie&#039;s Caffeine Pill Addiction\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0oRipJAlW5M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2>The Best<\/h2>\n<p><strong>4. <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/show\/punky-brewster-1984\/\">Punky Brewster<\/a><\/em>: \u201cCherie Lifesaver\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 Cherie (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/cherie-johnson\/\">Cherie Johnson<\/a>) nearly dies in this <em>Punky Brewster<\/em> episode when she hides and gets stuck in an old refrigerator. Luckily, her pals Punky (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/soleil-moon-frye\/\">Soleil Moon Frye<\/a>) and Margaux (Ami Foster) recently took a CPR class at school, and they resuscitated her. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/sitcoms\/comments\/1b0lnu8\/comment\/ks90k53\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">As Reddit users testify<\/a>, the episode was startlingly effective. \u201cI\u2019m not sure there\u2019s another episode that has such a lasting impact,\u201d one person said. Will and Carlton (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/alfonso-ribeiro\/\">Alfonso Ribeiro<\/a>) get pulled over by the cops merely for being two Black teens driving a luxury car, and later, Uncle Phil (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/james-avery\/\">James Avery<\/a>) shares his own experiences with racial profiling.
