Ethan Hawke has recently shared how Tom Cruise\u2019s impressive ability to perform his own stunts has reshaped expectations for actors across the industry.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Variety <\/i>about his new historical action drama, The Weight<\/i>, in which he also performs his own stunts, the 55-year-old actor praised his 63-year-old counterpart, noting that Cruise\u2019s dedication has raised expectations for other actors and increased pressure to avoid stunt doubles.<\/p>\n

\u201cTom Cruise has totally changed what\u2019s expected for actors. Some part of me has gotten angry over the years because everyone somehow feels like they\u2019re less if they use a stunt team,\u201d Hawke said.<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cWhat I liked about our movie is that there were no ridiculous stunts. It\u2019s human. It\u2019s not about things blowing up, so most of the stunts were things we could do. They weren\u2019t superhero things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the father of actress Maya Hawke revealed that he has had to adapt in order to survive in Hollywood.<\/p>\n

Despite early success in projects such as Reality Bites<\/i>, Gattaca<\/i>, and Great Expectations<\/i>, Hawke said age prompted him to rethink his career approach.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis job that I\u2019m in is a constant recontextualisation \u2014 not for yourself, but for the people watching,\u201d he told The Hollywood Reporter<\/i>.<\/p>\n

The Dead Poets Society<\/i> star noted, \u201cI came out of the gate getting leading parts, and that can breed a laziness about the actual methodology of acting.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI was teaching myself to reboot the computer, from a leading man to a character actor, and thinking, \u2018What if I could combine these things?\u2019 If you don\u2019t do that as you get older, you get a lot fewer opportunities. Very few people get to be Paul Newman,\u201d Hawke continued.<\/p>\n

Toward the end, he explained that he is \u201cwilling to play within the sandbox of commerciality.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Weight<\/i>, starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe and directed by Padraic McKinley, is set to have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26, 2026.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
