Those scenes shaped her view so much that she didn\u2019t even realize many of her own symptoms \u2013 from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2026\/01\/19\/menopause-symptom-dry-eyes-naomi-watts\/88162850007\/\">dry eyes<\/a> to frozen shoulder \u2013 were signs that she was nearing menopause.<\/p>\n<p>Now at 57, Watts wants to change this narrative.<\/p>\n<p>Podcasters, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/books\/2026\/01\/12\/melani-sanders-we-do-not-care-club-menopause-book\/87705311007\/\">creators<\/a>, comedians and writers are taking menopause conversations from taboo to mainstream. And Hollywood producers need to follow, Watts says. She is pushing for more stories that redefine midlife as a time of power, not decline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to see ourselves represented,\u201d she tells USA TODAY. \u201cTalking about menopause and showing our stories in movies can help women feel less alone. It\u2019s about taking the shame and stigma away and that\u2019s important through storytelling of all kinds.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">Fearing menopause would end her career<\/h2>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t long after Watts filmed \u201cKing Kong\u201d in 2005 (landing her on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/2009\/10\/05\/best-actresses-buck-business-entertainment-naomi-watts.html\">Forbes\u2019 list of most bankable actresses<\/a>) when she went to see her doctor about having her first baby.<\/p>\n<p>She was in her late 30s and her doctor told her she was in perimenopause. She was shocked. After a struggle to get pregnant and a miscarriage, Watts went on to have two children one year apart. Then her menopause symptoms began.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a lonely, scary time,\u201d she remembers.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in a time when there were two roles for women \u2014 romantic lead and grandma \u2014 Watts kept her menopause to herself. She worried that talking about it publicly would end her career.<\/p>\n<p>It took her more than 10 years to tell her menopause stories, becoming one of the first celebrities to do so widely. Many followed, from Drew Barrymore who shared that she was having a hot flash during an interview on her talk show in 2023 to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/celebrities\/2024\/05\/03\/halle-berry-menopause-bill\/73560451007\/\">Halle Berry<\/a> who joined U.S. senators at the Capitol last year to push for more money for menopause research and education.<\/p>\n<p>Watts co-founded Stripes, a menopause beauty and wellness brand, in 2022. The company sells everything from vitamins to vaginal cream. Her book, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/booklist\/books\/dare-i-say-it-everything-i-wish-id-known-about-menopause\/9780593729038\/2025-01-29\">\u201cDare I Say It: Everything I Wish I Knew About Menopause,\u201d<\/a> which combined funny and relatable stories with expert advice, was published in 2025. (The book comes out in paperback in February.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to be told it\u2019s time to stop,\u201d she says. \u201cI have plenty more to say and do.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">Will menopause have its movie moment?<\/h2>\n<p>Has there been a movie in the past decade featuring a menopause story line?<\/p>\n<p>Watts says it\u2019s hard to think of one.<\/p>\n<p>OK, how about TV?<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/tv\/2025\/07\/31\/leanne-morgan-netflix-tv-show\/85191875007\/\">\u201cLeeanne,\u201d<\/a> the sitcom from comedian Leeanne Morgan. And, um, great moments on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RZrnHnASRV8\">\u201cFleabag\u201d<\/a> (going back six years) and a reference in Watts\u2019 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/tv\/2025\/11\/11\/critics-slam-alls-fair-kim-kardashian-ryan-murphy-but-audiences-love-it\/87210394007\/\">\u201cAll\u2019s Fair\u201d<\/a> legal drama that came out this fall with a cast of actors over 40 including with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/picture-gallery\/entertainment\/celebrities\/2025\/10\/17\/alls-fair-hulu-kardashian-premiere-photos\/86744298007\/\">Glenn Close<\/a>, 78, Sarah Paulson, 51, Niecy Nash, 55, and Kim Kardashian, 45.<\/p>\n<p>Menopause is nearly invisible on the screen. Of the 225 films prominently featuring a 40-plus female character released between 2009 and 2024, only 6% (14 films) mentioned menopause, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/geenadavisinstitute.org\/research\/menopause-in-film-study-2025\/\">the Geena Davis Institute<\/a> found in a December 2025 study.<\/p>\n<p>One featured menopause as a recurring story line: In \u201cSex and the City 2,\u201d Kim Catrall\u2019s character navigates menopause and hormone therapy.<\/p>\n<p>Most rely on menopause as a comedic device, a joke to explain women\u2019s mood swings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fine to do all the funny stuff. I\u2019m not poo pooing that,\u201d Watts says, laughing. \u201cBut it\u2019s obviously much more in depth and complex like that. It doesn\u2019t have to be all doom and gloom if you have the education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Do you have a menopause story to tell? <\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gannett-nxuao.formstack.com\/forms\/perimenopause_and_menopause_survey\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Share with us and help us tell better stories.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">Menopause as more than just hot flashes<\/h2>\n<p>The Geena Davis Institute study found that two out of three people surveyed said it\u2019s important to portray menopause on screen in a more realistic way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are more than just hot flashes,\u201d says Madeline Di Nonno, president and CEO of the Geena Davis Institute. \u201cMovies and TV can directly affect how women see themselves. And we need to do better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About eight in 10 adults 18 and older say movies and TV shape how people see aging, according to a recent study from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/pri\/topics\/social-leisure\/activities-interests\/age-diversity-movies-television\/?CMP=RDRCT-PRI-ENT\">AARP<\/a>. (A little more than half of those surveyed were under 50.)<\/p>\n<p>And three in four adults age 50 and older are more likely to support movies or TV that include characters similar in age to them, according to the survey. The organization hosted the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/movies\/2026\/01\/11\/adam-sandler-aarp-career-achievement-award-speech\/88128781007\/\">Movie Awards for Grown Ups<\/a> to highlight older actors\u2019 contributions to movies on Jan. 10.<\/p>\n<p>Watts says the next generation is ready for a change, especially Millennial women who are starting perimenopause.<\/p>\n<p>For now, Watts is celebrating seeing more older women\u2019s success.<\/p>\n<p>The second season of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/tv\/2025\/04\/18\/white-lotus-your-friends-and-neighbors-rich-on-tv\/83027156007\/\">Jon Hamm<\/a> and Amanda Peet Apple TV+&#8217;s drama <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/tv\/2025\/04\/11\/jon-hamm-your-friends-and-neighbors-interview\/82741177007\/\">&#8220;Your Friends and Neighbors&#8221; <\/a>features Peet&#8217;s character navigating perimenopause. The season premieres in April. And <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7345011\/riot-women-review-britbox\/\">&#8220;Riot Women&#8221;<\/a> a BBC show featuring menopausal women who accidentally form a punk band is being hailed as the must-see show of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Melani Sanders&#8217; We Do Not Care Club: <\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/books\/2026\/01\/12\/melani-sanders-we-do-not-care-club-menopause-book\/87705311007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">How she is making us laugh through menopause<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Watts was happy to see Oscar nominations for<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/movies\/2025\/01\/23\/demi-moore-the-substance-nominations-oscars-2025\/77901731007\/\"> Demi Moore<\/a>, 63, in \u201cThe Substance\u201d and Fernanda Torres, 60, in \u201cI\u2019m Still Here\u201d in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>She also appreciated seeing older women as love interests, such as Nicole Kidman in \u201cBabygirl\u201d and Gwyneth Paltrow in \u201cMarty Supreme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I look at the women around me, whether they are actors or writers or producers, teachers or doctors, in their midlife they are doing incredible things and I\u2019m really impressed by them,\u201d she says. \u201cTheir stories should be reflected. It shouldn\u2019t just be young women on the screen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Watts says with age comes the ability to be pickier about her projects.<\/p>\n<p>She played the lead in \u201cThe Friend,\u201d a well received 2024 movie about a middle-aged woman who comes to care for a 150-pound Great Dane after her friend\u2019s suicide. Watts will return for season 2 for \u201cAll\u2019s Fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople stop me on the street now not just to ask for a selfie, but to say thank you for being part of the shift in creating the dialogue so I felt comfortable enough to talk to my family members, to my boss, my children,\u201d she says. \u201cThat feels incredibly meaningful and it was definitely worth the risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura Trujillo is a national columnist focusing on health and wellness.
