Though the film will feature a number of characters from more recent projects like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/movie-reviews\/659694\/thunderbolts-review\"><em>Thunderbolts*<\/em><\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/movie-reviews\/711370\/fantastic-four-first-steps-review-marvel\"><em>The Fantastic Four: First Steps<\/em><\/a>, the studio made a big deal out of revealing that Chris Evans will <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UiMg566PREA\">reprise his role as Steve Rogers<\/a>. It\u2019s not clear whether <em>Doomsday <\/em>will bring back <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/22555587\/black-widow-review-disney-plus-marvel\">even more actors<\/a> from the original <em>Avengers<\/em> whose characters either died or aged out of the team. But the project feels primed to work as a kind of reset that could give Marvel a way to reintroduce familiar faces and pivot out of its <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/10\/11\/23399378\/marvel-deadpool-3-avengers-secret-wars-blade-fantastic-four-delay-mcu\">meandering Multiverse Saga<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Those aspects of <em>Doomsday<\/em>\u2019s story \u2014 which will continue in <em>Avengers: Secret Wars<\/em> \u2014 are part of what makes the timing of Disney Plus\u2019 new <em>Wonder Man <\/em>miniseries feel somewhat odd. Like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24030104\/marvel-echo-review-daredevil-mcu-disney-plus-hulu\"><em>Echo<\/em><\/a> before it, <em>Wonder Man <\/em>is one of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23949013\/marvel-spotlight-echo\">Marvel\u2019s Spotlight projects<\/a> that the studio doesn\u2019t consider required viewing in order to keep up with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23942217\/marvel-mcu-marvels-variety-franchise-disney-quality\">the MCU\u2019s larger ongoing story<\/a>. At a time when Marvel seems more focused on reintroducing familiar faces in epic crossover events, <em>Wonder Man <\/em>stands out as an almost entirely self-contained character study that zooms in on the life of a comics hero that many casual fans probably aren\u2019t all that familiar with. But as unusually timed as <em>Wonder Man<\/em> is, it\u2019s also one of Marvel\u2019s most compelling shows yet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Set in sunny Los Angeles at some point after the events of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2013\/5\/2\/4293532\/iron-man-3-review\"><em>Iron Man 3<\/em><\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/22634609\/marvel-shang-chi-ten-rings-review\"><em>Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings<\/em><\/a>, <em>Wonder Man <\/em>follows struggling actor Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) as he sets out to book the gig of a lifetime. Simon is a talented performer who has been able to land jobs on major series like <em>American Horror Story<\/em>. But his tendency to overthink his roles makes it hard for him to find consistent work. When Simon is fired after giving a little too much feedback during a shoot, he doesn\u2019t want his supportive motherr, Martha (Shola Adewusi), or disapproving brother, Eric (Demetrius Grosse), to know.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The news sends Simon\u2019s agent, Janelle (X Mayo), into a fit of rage, but he\u2019s confident that he can turn his luck around when he hears from disgraced actor Trevor Slattery (Sir Ben Kingsley) that a studio is rebooting <em>Wonder Man <\/em>\u2014 the classic (fictional, in-universe) superhero film that first sparked Simon\u2019s passion for acting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">From the moment that <em>Wonder Man <\/em>first name-drops real-world entertainment like <em>The Matrix <\/em>and <em>Twilight<\/em>, you can start to feel the meta sense of humor co-creators Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest use to shape the series. In Simon\u2019s bubble, people remember Slattery\u2019s involvement in a bit of global terrorism, but they are much more concerned about what\u2019s happening in Hollywood. That kind of tunnel vision makes it easy for Simon and his peers to believe that, after spending some time in prison, Slattery\u2019s back in town and eager to find his next role.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Simon and Slattery\u2019s shared love for the arts quickly turns the pair into unlikely friends who genuinely believe that they are both perfect for the lead roles in the <em>Wonder Man <\/em>movie \u2014 a cheesy sci-fi space opera that looks like a cross between <em>Flash Gordon <\/em>and <em>Star Wars<\/em>. Rather than worrying about <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2016\/5\/3\/11577406\/captain-america-civil-war-review-marvel-avengers\">violating the Sokovia Accords<\/a>, Simon lives in fear of the Doorman Clause \u2014 a mandate barring superhumans from working in Hollywood because of the danger (and astronomical insurance costs) their powers might cause. He\u2019d no longer be able to work in Hollywood if anyone knew what he could really do, and he would be imprisoned by the United States Department of Damage Control.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Though Simon\u2019s super secret looms large in <em>Wonder Man<\/em>\u2019s drama-forward story, the show is more about his relationship with Slattery and the psychological toll that hiding core aspects of one\u2019s identity can take on a person. Here, Abdul-Mateen is clearly poking fun at himself and other actors who have <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/tv\/features\/yahya-abdul-mateen-ii-watchmen-dr-manhattan-matrix-interview-1203509720\/\">signed onto splashy comics-inspired projects<\/a>, but he also brings a quiet vulnerability to Simon that underlines his being a regular man who just wants to be recognized for his artistic talent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">After two turns as Slattery in previous Marvel projects, Kingsley finally has the chance to make the character feel like a real person whose ridiculous airs belie a genuine complexity. The two actors\u2019 chemistry carries the series in moments when its <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tv-reviews\/627183\/the-studio-review-seth-rogen-apple\"><em>The Studio<\/em><\/a>-esque comedic subplots go a little off the rails. Marvel is premiering <em>Wonder Man <\/em>at a point in the MCU when it feels like significant portions of the franchise may be effectively reset in order to bring back actors and characters that first made the studio a massive success. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/marvel-kevin-feige-robert-downey-jr-miles-morales-1236465488\/\"><em>Wonder Man<\/em>\u2019s release<\/a> almost certainly reflects the way that Marvel\u2019s long-term production scheduling has often shifted over the past few years in response <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/7\/17\/23798246\/strike-hollywoods-writers-actors-wga-sag-aftra\">to factors<\/a> largely out of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/12\/18\/24007030\/disney-jonathan-majors-marvel-fired-kang-conquerer\">the studio\u2019s control<\/a>.
