Photo courtesy of: Michael Hudson and Mahina Turner<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Royals were founded by longtime football player Mike Thomas in 2020 who decided to build his own team when the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gohawksathletics.org\/\">Tulalip Hawks<\/a> (who he played for at the time), took a hiatus due to the pandemic.<!-- Either there are no banners, they are disabled or none qualified for this location! --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe took about a year off, so I started thinking about building a program of my own that was successful on, and off, the field. When a lot of people think of minor league football they think backyard football, but I wanted to change that whole mindset. That\u2019s why I call my program pro development,\u201d <strong><em>said Thomas.<\/em><\/strong> \u201cI wanted to make a team where people could come here and get something out of it, whether they\u2019re going to learn a trade through our trade school, or go on to the NFL, there has to be an outcome for these guys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prior to playing for the Tulalip Hawks, Thomas began playing football in high school and started his semi-pro career in 2011, through teams like the Renton Ravens, the Eastside Extreme, and the Snohomish Vikings. It was his time playing with the Vikings in particular \u2013 under Owner Jeff Fisher\u2019s management \u2013 that truly taught him the most about football, and how to properly run a team.<\/p>\n<div class=\"g g-3\">\n<div class=\"g-dyn a-110 c-1\"><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"MTEwLDMsMSw2MA==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sno-isle.org\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lynnwoodtimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/JanOL.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>However, during Thomas\u2019 football career he shared that he was often promised things about his future that never came true, so when he founded the Royals he made a commitment to himself, and to his players, that whatever he promises he\u2019ll make happen.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas recalls how it all came together \u2013 beginning from idea to a now 70 player team recognized by the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wcpminorleague.com\/\">West Coast Pacific Minor Leagues<\/a>. It all started in a McDonald\u2019s drive thru, Thomas said, when he noticed a \u201cbig guy\u201d taking his order.<\/p>\n<div class=\"g g-7\">\n<div class=\"g-dyn a-60 c-1\"><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"NjAsNywxLDYw\" href=\"https:\/\/elitegaragelynnwood.us\/?utm_source=LynnwoodTimes&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_campaign=LynnwoodTimes2025&amp;utm_id=2025\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lynnwoodtimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Elite_Final.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI asked if he played football and he said he hadn\u2019t had the chance since high school. I told him he should join the Everett Royals but at the time, I didn\u2019t have an LLC, a website, nothing,\u201d <strong><em>said Thomas.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When Thomas went home, he applied for an LLC, built a website, and made an official announcement knowing when this fast-food worker got off work that evening, he would look up the Everett Royals.<\/p>\n<div class=\"g g-3\">\n<div class=\"g-dyn a-110 c-1\"><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"MTEwLDMsMSw2MA==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sno-isle.org\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lynnwoodtimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/JanOL.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The McDonald\u2019s employee, named Will Grant, was the first official player for the Everett Royals \u2013 playing with the team for a season before moving back to his home state of Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p>Also in the Everett Royals\u2019 first year one of its players (DeShon Johnson Williams) went on to get drafted by the Seattle Seahawks, which Thomas said just reinforced his idea of \u201cpro development.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"g g-5\">\n<div class=\"g-dyn a-112 c-1\"><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"MTEyLDUsMSw2MA==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.electroimpact.com\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lynnwoodtimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Banner970x250_EI_Jan2026.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt showed me that you can make it regardless of what level of football you come from,\u201d <strong><em>said Thomas.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But not only that, having an Everett Royal get drafted by the Seattle Seahawks was great exposure for Thomas and his league, garnering attention from many leaders in local sports.<\/p>\n<div class=\"g g-7\">\n<div class=\"g-dyn a-60 c-1\"><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"NjAsNywxLDYw\" href=\"https:\/\/elitegaragelynnwood.us\/?utm_source=LynnwoodTimes&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_campaign=LynnwoodTimes2025&amp;utm_id=2025\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lynnwoodtimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Elite_Final.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Royals are led by Head Coach Boyd Demus, who has been with Thomas since day one. Photo courtesy of: Michael Hudson and Mahina Turner<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of \u201coff the field,\u201d the Everett Royals are more than just another semi-pro football team they\u2019re advocates, and active participants, in community engagement volunteerism. Outside of the football season, the Royals partner with Everett-based <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.millenniaministries.org\/\">Millenia Ministries<\/a> to hand out food to the homeless, clean the streets of litter, and help coach little league football for kids.<!-- Either there are no banners, they are disabled or none qualified for this location! --><\/p>\n<p>The Everett Royals have their own food drive every year through a partnership with the Federal Way Food Bank. The semi-pro team also partners with financial literacy programs to offer these services to players who might be interested. <\/p>\n<div class=\"g g-3\">\n<div class=\"g-dyn a-110 c-1\"><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"MTEwLDMsMSw2MA==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sno-isle.org\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lynnwoodtimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/JanOL.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Royals\u2019 Partnership Director is none other than DanVo\u2019nique Bletson-Reed, President of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/lynnwoodtimes.com\/2026\/01\/19\/schbc-mlk-2026\/\">Snohomish County Black Heritage Committee<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why this program is amazing. It\u2019s much more than football, and we want to give our players the opportunity to not only grow on the field, but grow off the field,\u201d <strong><em>said Thomas.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"g g-7\">\n<div class=\"g-dyn a-60 c-1\"><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"NjAsNywxLDYw\" href=\"https:\/\/elitegaragelynnwood.us\/?utm_source=LynnwoodTimes&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_campaign=LynnwoodTimes2025&amp;utm_id=2025\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lynnwoodtimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Elite_Final.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Thomas gave an example of one of his players, Cameron Bridges, who joined his team a \u201cshy kid\u201d but now, when he speaks, \u201che speaks like a leader\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Another Royals player, Kelechi Amonu Jones, who grew up in Nigeria and never had the opportunity to play football despite always being a fan, found his opportunity with the Everett Royals in 2025. His first year with the team Jones was awarded the Rookie of the Year Award.<\/p>\n<div class=\"g g-3\">\n<div class=\"g-dyn a-110 c-1\"><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"MTEwLDMsMSw2MA==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sno-isle.org\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lynnwoodtimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/JanOL.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In addition to the 70 players (ranging in age from 18 to 60) on the Everett Royals, the semi-pro team also has its own cheerleading team of about 30 girls.<\/p>\n<p>The Everett Royals play at Mount Pilchuck High School\u2019s football stadium mostly but try and play at fields around Snohomish County to represent it various cities.<\/p>\n<p>The season for the Royals begins in April and runs through June, with their first game this year being on April 11 against the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ww.gnfafootball.org\/whatcomvikings.htm\">Whatcom Vikings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets for games are free for high school students, $5 for children and military, and $10 for the general public.<\/p>\n<div class=\"g g-7\">\n<div class=\"g-dyn a-60 c-1\"><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"NjAsNywxLDYw\" href=\"https:\/\/elitegaragelynnwood.us\/?utm_source=LynnwoodTimes&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_campaign=LynnwoodTimes2025&amp;utm_id=2025\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lynnwoodtimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Elite_Final.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" src=\"https:\/\/lynnwoodtimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1687940665-full-1024x731.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lynnwoodtimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1687940665-full-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lynnwoodtimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1687940665-full-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lynnwoodtimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1687940665-full-768x548.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lynnwoodtimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1687940665-full.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Everett Royals. Photo courtesy of: Michael Hudson and Mahina Turner<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Seeing the Everett Royals play in-person is a \u201clife-changings\u201d experience, Thomas said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese guys are loud, they\u2019re a family and they don\u2019t break. You\u2019ll see a guy with his head down and the entire team will help him pick it back up. Watching a Royals game is probably one of the best games you\u2019ll ever watch and every year our crowd keeps growing,\u201d <strong><em>said Thomas.<\/em><\/strong> \u201cOur cheerleaders alone make the game even more alive. When they\u2019re out there, they\u2019re pumping the crowd up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the games the Everett Royals often bring in high school bands, dance teams, and little league football at half-time.
