Stewart tore into the shifting explanations by officials in the Trump administration as they attempted to justify Pretti\u2019s killing, even accusing him \u2015 without evidence \u2015 of being a \u201cdomestic terrorist<\/a>.\u201d Trump officials continued to make accusations against Pretti as footage emerged from \u201cevery angle imaginable that contradicts the government\u2019s version of events,\u201d Stewart said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bystander footage showed Pretti<\/a> holding a cellphone as he recorded the scene. Federal officers surrounded him, and in the ensuing scuffle, they discovered he had a concealed firearm, which he was licensed to carry. The agents took the gun as they wrestled with him on the ground and then shot him multiple times. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Stewart called the administration\u2019s attempt to claim Pretti was a threat despite all the footage showing otherwise to be \u201cthe denial of the reality that we all witnessed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re lying,\u201d Stewart said. \u201cWe saw it. And that\u2019s how brazen they lie when they know we\u2019ve seen the truth. That\u2019s how they lie when they know we know. Imagine how they lie when there\u2019s no evidence to contradict them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Stewart also pointed to a deeper irony: Pretti did, in a way, have a weapon in his hand after all \u2015 one the government might fear more than any gun. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cA handheld aluminum, 1080p, 60 FPS weapon of mass illumination,\u201d Stewart said, describing Pretti\u2019s cellphone. \u201cBecause there is nothing more dangerous to a regime predicated on lies than witnesses who capture the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
