Giannis Antetokounmpo is currently out with a calf\u00a0injury,\u00a0but that\u00a0hasn\u2019t\u00a0stopped the trade rumors from swirling around him.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to insider Marc Stein<\/a> (subscription) the two teams expressing the most interest are the Miami Heat and New York Knicks, both of which have long coveted the Greek superstar.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Milwaukee will do everything in their power to avoid this outcome, but\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0increasingly looking like it might be the only way they have out of the mess they have created, as their roster is old,\u00a0expensive\u00a0and not\u00a0very good\u00a0without Giannis.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Interestingly, the Pistons were named as the team that would have the easiest route to land Giannis according to ESPN\u2019s Bobby Marks<\/a>, but\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0highly unlikely given the cost and\u00a0the\u00a0fact that the Pistons are doing\u00a0just fine\u00a0without him as the\u00a0first place\u00a0team in the Eastern Conference.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Pistons\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0trading for Giannis, at least not at this trade deadline, but if Giannis is\u00a0moved, it might make the Pistons\u2019 path to the Finals easier.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Miami Heat and New York Knicks\u00a0should\u00a0be careful what they wish for\u00a0<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Every time\u00a0a superstar name comes up in trade talks or free agency, the Heat and Knicks are mentioned, as they play in desirable markets and in the case of Miami, one that comes with sun and no state income tax.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Giannis has expressed interest in both teams as\u00a0possible destinations, and if he does get traded,\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0be surprised if it\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0to either the Heat or Knicks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This could\u00a0actually be\u00a0a good thing for the Pistons.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Whatever team trades for Giannis is going to have to gut their roster to do it, as well as give up\u00a0all of\u00a0their draft assets, which we know is a risky proposition given his age and injury history.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Giannis has suffered myriad calf injuries over the last few\u00a0seasons,\u00a0and most of them have just been during routine movements, so this is a problem that\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0likely going\u00a0away with age.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Giannis may be out for 4-6\u00a0weeks,\u00a0or he could miss the rest of the season, as there is no timetable for his return.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In the case of the Knicks, that would\u00a0almost be\u00a0punting on\u00a0this season, as\u00a0they\u2019d\u00a0have to give up a couple of players to get him and be shorthanded while they wait for him to return. Then\u00a0they\u2019d\u00a0have to try and work Giannis back into a rotation full of new teammates right as the playoffs are starting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I still\u00a0wouldn\u2019t\u00a0fancy facing Giannis in a playoff series, but\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0a tough ask, and if he\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0come back, would all but remove New York as a threat.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Heat\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0much of a threat now, as they are currently outside of the playoff picture and would have to get there via the play-in tournament.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0not sure they even have the package to land Giannis, but Miami thinks they can build one around Tyler\u00a0Herro,\u00a0Kel\u2019el\u00a0Ware\u00a0and\u00a0picks, but it would require at least one more contract to make the salaries work (This is where the Terry Rozier sage becomes HUGE for Miami).<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

That might require them to move Norman Powell, who is on an expiring contract and is a guy who could\u00a0definitely help\u00a0the Pistons <\/a>if they wanted to get involved.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

That leaves the Heat with Bam Adebayo and Giannis to build\u00a0around,\u00a0and\u00a0they\u2019d\u00a0be paying\u00a0those two nearly $110 million\u00a0combined\u00a0next season, making it difficult to build a deep and competitive team around them.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This is especially true when you consider whichever team gets Giannis will then have to extend him at an astronomical number when\u00a0he is 32 years old.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It could work out, and who knows,\u00a0maybe the\u00a0Greek Freak will bring the first title to New York since 1973, but\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0just as likely (more really) that it costs the Knicks their season and blows up their cap sheet for the\u00a0foreseeable future.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In other words, the Pistons aren’t likely getting Giannis themselves, but if he does get traded, it could actually help them.<\/p>\n
