James Hale (Bautista) is a steely Navy man in Honolulu who\u2019s a hardcase at work and at home and has no patience for shenanigans. There\u2019s a lot of simmering hard feelings between the two \u2013\u00a0which are slowly revealed through the film \u2013 and neither of them particularly liked their dad, who had connections to the underworld. Still, James and Jonny both begin investigating his death, separately, until they finally work together, and wind up tussling with Yakuza ninjas, bad guys in helicopters and motorcycles, and an extremely shady real estate guy (a very punchable Claes Bang).<\/p>\n<p>And if you\u2019re wondering why it\u2019s called \u201cThe Wrecking Crew\u201d? Well, you don\u2019t put Momoa and Bautista in the same movie for a tea party. Between all the bickering and macho posturing, they manage to leave so much vehicular damage and injurious mayhem in their wake that it\u2019s hard to tamp down the explosive ecstasy of your inner 10-year-old.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Before this, Bautista and Momoa have mostly stuck to their own superhero worlds \u2013 the former\u2019s Drax being a Guardian of the Galaxy, the latter\u2019s Aquaman a Justice Leaguer \u2013 and did costar, among many others, in the \u201cDune\u201d movies. But there\u2019s a winning yin and yang dynamic to the actors that\u2019s a hoot to watch.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Bautista is the more serious too-old-for-this-stuff guy, Momoa\u2019s the loose cannon, and yet they feed off each other\u2019s energy and their characters become more alike than not in a believable manner. And yes, they\u2019re action heroes of the A-plus sort, but they also bring a meaty amount of emotion to match their biceps, including one sequence where fisticuffs lead to a heartfelt, cathartic convo years in the making.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/><media-gallery-promo asset-id=\"88035550007\" class=\"column ten-column no-gutter spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Jacob Batalon, aka Tom Holland\u2019s buddy in the Spider-Man movies, has a fun role as the brothers&#8217; reluctant tech-expert sidekick. Morena Baccarin is splendidly sassy as Jonny\u2019s love interest and Stephen Root plays the exasperated cop trying to deal with the bros\u2019 wanton property destruction.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s only January and, between this and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/movies\/2026\/01\/15\/the-rip-movie-review-ben-affleck-matt-damon\/88185563007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/movies\/2026\/01\/15\/the-rip-movie-review-ben-affleck-matt-damon\/88185563007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cThe Rip,\u201d<\/a> the streaming gods have gifted us with a couple of solid, enjoyable action flicks. There are parts of \u201cWrecking Crew\u201d that could be better, including an intriguing subplot involving Hawaiian homelands that\u2019s merely touched on.
