That\u2019s because the Walk\u2019s official groundbreaking didn\u2019t take place until February 1960, six months following the song\u2019s release and more than half a decade after the group began performing. And what would he have said if you had told him the Isleys would still be working in 2026, with an ambitious new album in the works?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI would say that\u2019s fantastic and amazing. Oh, man, that\u2019s so awesome,\u201d says Ronald, who leads the group with his lone surviving sibling, guitarist <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/ernie-isley\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ernie-isley\" data-tag=\"ernie-isley\">Ernie Isley<\/a>. \u201cSo many years, man.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  size-large alignnone \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure  lrv-u-font-family-secondary u-color-medium-grey lrv-u-border-b-1 u-border-color-light-grey-tint-two u-margin-b-150 lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1024px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-flex lrv-u-flex-direction-column lrv-u-padding-t-1 lrv-u-padding-b-1\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-line-height-normal lrv-u-font-size-14 u-font-family-neue u-letter-spacing-007-rem u-margin-b-050\">Ronald, left, and Ernie Isley of the Isley Brothers<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOver those years, the Isley Brothers\u2019 music has been the soundtrack to countless parties, backyard cookouts, weddings, hookups, heartbreaks, road trips and sporting events, as well as actual movies, with prominent needle drops in \u201cAnchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,\u201d \u201cRush Hour\u201d and \u201cBridget Jones\u2019s Baby,\u201d among others. They even provided an early showcase for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/jimi-hendrix\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jimi-hendrix\" data-tag=\"jimi-hendrix\">Jimi Hendrix<\/a>, who, as a member of their backing band, made his recording debut on their 1964 single \u201cTestify.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Testify(pts.1&amp;2) - The Isley Brothers (feat. Jimi Hendrix)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FUdYp-6a4RA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Isleys are the only act to score hits on the Billboard Hot 100 across six consecutive decades (1950s-2000s), cutting a wide stylistic swath from R&amp;B raveups like the aforementioned million-seller \u201cShout\u201d and \u201cTwist &amp; Shout\u201d and the string-sweetened Motown track \u201cThis Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)\u201d to the funky soul of the horn-driven \u201cIt\u2019s Your Thing\u201d and the Latin-accented psychedelic guitar workout \u201cThat Lady.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Isleys songs have also been sampled frequently by hip-hop artists, most notably the group\u2019s \u201cquiet storm\u201d soul classics \u201cFootsteps in the Dark\u201d (Ice Cube\u2019s \u201cIt Was a Good Day\u201d), \u201cBetween the Sheets\u201d (Notorious B.I.G.\u2019s \u201cBig Poppa,\u201d Megan Thee Stallion\u2019s \u201cConsistency\u201d), \u201cBallad for the Fallen Solder\u201d (Drake and 21 Savage\u2019s \u201cPrivileged Rappers\u201d) and \u201cVoyage to Atlantis\u201d (SZA\u2019s \u201cKitchen\u201d). Everybody comes back to them time and time again,\u201d says Rachael Conte, VP of sample clearance, legal and business affairs, for Sony Music Publishing. \u201cRon Isley\u2019s vocals are legendary. Sometimes there\u2019s a vocal sample, the bass line \u2026 it\u2019s all parts of the song. But, for Ernie, the best example of its impact might be the time he met <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/paul-mccartney\/\" id=\"auto-tag_paul-mccartney\" data-tag=\"paul-mccartney\">Paul McCartney<\/a> at a private event at businessman Ron Perelman\u2019s estate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201c[McCartney] gives me a bear hug and just about cuts my wind off and says, \u2018Ernie, if it were not for the Isley Brothers, the Beatles would still be in Liverpool,\u2019\u201d recalls Ernie. \u201cWhen we got on stage together, he said that again for everybody to hear. And we performed with Bon Jovi, Jennifer Hudson, Usher and I don\u2019t know who else. Wow. It was just one of those moments. To see everybody stand up, clap their hands, and sing \u2018Twist and Shout\u2019 and \u2018Shout\u2019 \u2026 They\u2019re just like \u2018Happy Birthday,\u2019 right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn 2022, the Isleys returned to the charts with a remake of their 1975 song \u201cMake Me Say It Again, Girl,\u201d featuring a co-lead vocal by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/beyonce\/\" id=\"auto-tag_beyonce\" data-tag=\"beyonce\">Beyonc\u00e9<\/a>. It had a 37-week run on Billboard\u2019s Adult R&amp;B Songs chart, peaking at No. 1, and made strong showings on Billboard\u2019s R&amp;B\/Hip-Hop Airplay (No. 9) and Hot R&amp;B Songs (No. 20) charts, but somehow missed the Hot 100.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI called [Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s] mother [<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/tina-knowles\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tina-knowles\" data-tag=\"tina-knowles\">Tina Knowles<\/a>], and I said, \u2018We\u2019re going to do this [remake], and I want to do it with Beyonc\u00e9,\u2019\u201d recalls Ronald. \u201cShe called her, and she called me back in five minutes. He knows exactly what to say, and he knows exactly what he\u2019s looking for, and that\u2019s the mark of a real pro,\u201d says Maserati.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe\u2019s even more impressed by the Isleys\u2019 remarkable stamina. \u201cThey knocked out a record a year for a very long time, and that\u2019s not done anymore. There were some things where they were at the forefront and other things where they were catching up. And that\u2019s what artists do. That\u2019s survival in a tough business. That\u2019s like being in the Olympics every year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSchooled in a variety of genres, from country &amp; western and R&amp;B to pop and gospel, the original lineup of the Isley Brothers began performing together in their native Cincinnati in 1954, encouraged by their father O\u2019Kelly Isley Sr., a Navy veteran and former vaudevillian. They quickly scored a major success, taking first place on the national TV competition show \u201cTed Mack\u2019s Original Amateur Hour.\u201d But, in September 1954, the family was dealt a devastating blow when 11-year-old Vernon \u2014 who, contrary to reports, was not their lead singer \u2014 was killed when he was hit by a vehicle while riding a bicycle to school. Encouraged by their mother Sallye, a church pianist and organist, they soldiered on as a trio.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter the death of their father in 1957, the family relocated to Teaneck, N.J., to be closer to the action in New York City. In 1959, the Isleys signed to RCA Victor and scored a hit with the self-penned \u201cShout,\u201d and followed two years later with \u201cTwist &amp; Shout\u201d for independent label Wand Records, which hit No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn 1963, the Isleys hired a new guitarist from Seattle, an Army vet named Jimi Hendrix. They bought him his first Fender Stratocaster and let him live at the family home, where he made a big impression on 11-year-old Ernie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis guy was unlike any musician I had heard or seen,\u201d says Ernie of Hendrix, who sat next to him on the family couch as they watched the Beatles make their debut on \u201cThe Ed Sullivan Show\u201d on Feb. 9, 1964. \u201cI didn\u2019t know why he was practicing so much because he didn\u2019t need to practice. He just played that well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tErnie famously channeled Hendrix with his distorted, liquid lead on their 1973 hit \u201cThat Lady,\u201d recorded with a collection of newly acquired gear: a Fender Strat and Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi distortion and Maestro PS1-A Phase Shifter pedals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI hit the very first note on the guitar solo, and the entire song changed into something else,\u201d says Ernie, who played his first live gig with the Isleys as a drummer at 14 and went on to play bass on their hit \u201cIt\u2019s Your Thing,\u201d before switching to guitar. \u201cI was like, \u2018Oh, my God.\u2019 I had never sounded like that. They lost eldest brother O\u2019Kelly at the age of 48 in 1986, and youngest brother Marvin (who played bass with the Isleys from the early 1970s through 1997) passed at 56 in 2010, followed by Rudolph at 84 in 2023. In March, Ernie will turn 74, and Ronald turns 85 two months later, but they aren\u2019t stopping. Inspired by their success with Beyonc\u00e9, they\u2019re working on an album full of collabs with a collection of high-profile contemporary artists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAnd, as far as Ernie is concerned, all of his siblings are still with him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI virtually communicate with all of my brothers every day. That\u2019s a spiritual thing,\u201d he says. \u201cWe have collectively shared in the music, so there\u2019s no disconnect, really. And me and Ronald \u2014 it\u2019s a great thing.
