Billy Bragg<\/a> has shared a new song, \u2018City Of Heroes\u2019, in tribute to the people of Minneapolis. Listen below.<\/p>\n The singer-songwriter and political activist wrote that track amid protests against\u00a0the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), following the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in the Minnesota city.<\/p>\n The agent who shot Good has been placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation, as have the two agents involved in the fatal shooting of Pretti (via BBC News<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n ICE has described its highly controversial actions in Minnesota as \u201cthe largest mass deportation operation in American history\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cThe ghost of Martin Niem\u00f6ller haunts the halls of history\/ When they came for the communists\/ He said, \u2018It\u2019s nothing to do with me\u2019<\/em>,\u201d Bragg sings on his impassioned latest offering.<\/p>\n The first line is a reference to German pastor Martin Niem\u00f6ller\u2019s early silence during the rise of the Nazis in the 1930s.<\/p>\n He adds: \u201cWhen they came for the immigrants\/ I got in their face\/ When they came for the refugees\/ I got in their face\/ [\u2026] They use tear gas and pepper spray\/ Against our whistles and our phones\/ But in this city of heroes\/ We will protect our home<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe murder of Alex Pretti was horrifically shocking,\u201d Bragg explained of \u2018City Of Heroes\u2019, which was written, recorded and released within 24 hours.<\/p>\n \u201cAll the more so as we are still reeling from the images of the murder of Renee Good. That these crimes can be committed in broad daylight, on camera and yet no one is held accountable only adds to the injustice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
