Veteran royal commentator Robert Hardman has recalled an unexpected and unusually personal confrontation with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor<\/a> that began with a polite introduction by Sarah Ferguson<\/a>. Hardman, one of the UK\u2019s most respected royal journalists and a long-time contributor to The Daily Telegraph<\/em>, described the encounter while reflecting on the shifting relationship between individual members of the Royal Family and the institution itself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Known for his authoritative biographies of King Charles III<\/a> and Queen Elizabeth II<\/a>, Hardman has covered the monarchy at close quarters for decades, frequently reporting from royal engagements where journalists and royals interact in tightly managed settings. Recalling the moment on the Daily Mail<\/em>‘s show Royal Confidential<\/em>, Hardman explained: \u201cI mean, probably the biggest showdown I had was with Prince Andrew<\/a> and it was at the time that he’d obviously broken up with with the Duchess. Well, he’s obviously no longer the Duke, she’s no longer the Duchess, but the Duke and Duchess had split up.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Andrew and Sarah separated in 1992, following six turbulent years of marriage. Despite their split, the pair remained on friendly terms and continued to appear together at public engagements, a dynamic that set the stage for Hardman\u2019s encounter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

At the time, Hardman said that he had written a story concerning the financial arrangements following their separation, touching on claims that Ferguson was struggling financially.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThere was a story to do with the financial arrangements and it was to do with the fact that she wasn’t being given that much. She was running out of money<\/a> and I can’t even remember the exact details,\u201d Hardman said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Just days later, he found himself covering a charity royal golf event attended by both Andrew and Ferguson. It was there that the Duchess made the fateful introduction. \u201cI talked to the Duchess and she said, \u2018Oh, you must you must come and meet my husband,\u2019\u201d Hardman recalled, admitting his immediate apprehension.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She duly led him over, announcing: \u201cDarling, this is Mr. Hardman from the Telegraph.\u201d Andrew\u2019s response was instant and confrontational. \u201cHe went, \u2018You’re the one. You’re the one.\u2019 And I thought, \u2018Here we go\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But Andrew’s anger was not directed at the article\u2019s financial claims. Instead, Hardman was stunned to discover the 65-year-old was furious about a throwaway line involving his dog. \u201cHe said, \u2018You’re the one who wrote that very inaccurate thing about my dog,\u2019\u201d Hardman recounted, adding that Andrew was \u201cvery cross about what I’ve written about the dog and not about the other stuff at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Andrew had tainted the reputation of the Royal Family with his association with Epstein and for many years was dogged by allegations he sexually abused Virginia Giuffre after she was trafficked by the financier.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
